Like so many other vintage Corvettes with rich heritage hiding beneath their skins, this 1969 Corvette convertible doesn’t look like anything special at first glance.
Especially in its run-down condition after being off the road and stored for “a very long time.”
But this ragged-looking Sting Ray actually has the distinction of being one of only 390 Corvettes in 1969 with the L89 engine that included the 427/435 horsepower L71 V8 and aluminum cylinder heads, mated with a four-speed manual transmission.
Considering that this engine was an $832.05 option during a time when the base price for the whole convertible was just $4,438, you can see why less than 1 percent of the 38,762 customers chose it in ’69.
Back then, it was considered the more street-friendly version of the 427, especially compared to the much more rare but also more track-oriented L88 427/430 that saw only 116 examples built.
The seller, who lives in the Jackson, New Jersey area, had decided to try to find a new owner who would be willing to do a body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration, he hoped.
Thus, he placed it for sale on eBay, where after a whopping 87 bids with a high of $35,301, it was still below the reserve when the auction closed on Monday afternoon.
The seller calls it a “Real Deal L89 car” that still has the Protect-o-Plate and matching-numbers engine, and though he does admit that this massive motor is not running currently and is missing its intake and carburetors, he says the block is original with the LP stamp and VIN.
The seller believes the frame is “solid” under a coating of surface rust, which would definitely make restoration a lot easier. Originally a Lemans Blue over Bright Blue convertible with a matching hardtop, both the interior and exterior have seen their better days after such a long period of neglect.
On the bright side, though, the body appears to have already undergone some prep work for a new paint job and doesn’t show any glaring damage. The original interior is described as “original and complete” but in “ok condition” – perhaps good enough for a driver but this rare car definitely deserves much more than just “ok,” the seller believes.
We’d be inclined to agree with him. Would you be willing to take on the challenge of bringing back this piece of legendary Corvette performance history?

I don’t understand how this car can be numbers matching, the text in the EBAY ad says the VIN.# is 194679S725699 and yet the picture in the listing does show the “LP” stamping on the picture of the block it also shows a VIN.# of 717785 . Could anyone clarify this for me please. Thank You
I would like to know how much the reserve was.
Craig – I wondered the same.
