MotorWeek is in the early stages of a full road test on the revolutionary new 2024 Corvette E-Ray, but already has discovered there are two ways to show off in Chevy’s new hybrid sports car.
“The first,” says MotorWeek’s Greg Carloss, “will probably annoy some Corvette purists, but it’s to put it in stealth mode and drive on electric power alone. And yeah, I realize that for a few miles up to 45 mph, that effectively makes this a front-wheel-drive Corvette.”
Not necessarily a bad thing for enthusiasts solely interested in performance, though, as the front-mounted electric motor adds another 160 horsepower to the 495 horses provided by the gasoline-powered 6.2-liter LT2 V8 engine. That total output of 655 horsepower makes the E-Ray the quickest Corvette ever with a 0 to 60 time of 2.5 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.5 seconds at 130 mph.
Carloss says the stealth mode offers some practical advantages in the real world – “For instance, not waking up the entire neighborhood on a cold morning when you’re trying to beat everybody to the donut shop.”
Of course, if you don’t really care about upsetting your neighbors, the second way to show off in your new E-Ray is just to stomp the accelerator, he says. “That instant torque coming from the front motor really kicks up the Corvette experience a notch.”
For maximum performance, he suggests starting with a fully charged battery pack, which by the way is mounted in the tunnel between the seats and is recharged by the gas engine and regenerative braking. “We found that simply driving in charge+ mode returned those sweet, sweet electrons in minutes or even less,” Carloss says.
Look for a full road test of the E-Ray coming soon from the folks at MotorWeek.

Take a look at the video and freeze it when he shows the dash the first time. They are running this ErY at “normal” tire temps of 36 Front and 31 Rear. Can’t imagine the electric motor calls for 5 psi difference in front. Their first impression is either phony or skewed. I hope they do a better pre run check at Roebling road or whatever track they take it to.
