GM is Offering Reimbursement for C7 Grand Sport and Z06 Owners who Fixed their Cracked Wheels

One of the on-going sagas for owners of the C7 Corvette Z06 and Grand Sport is that it’s a known fact that the wheels that came with those cars had a propensity for cracking and breaking. For years, General Motors has shrugged off these requests for warranty repairs, stating that these issues were caused by impact damage with pot holes and other road debris. We’ve been covering these wheel cracks almost since day one and in fact there have been several class action lawsuits that were brought against GM specifically over the C7’s cracked wheels.

So imagine our surprise when we learned that letters were going to current or previous owners of C7 Corvette Z06s and Grand Sports about an extended warranty coverage and repair reimbursement program for those who have repaired their wheels. While GM is still not taking responsibility for the manufacture of these inferior wheels, it looks like they are offering a way for those customers who were impacted to possibly make a new claim for reimbursement against this program.

The letter says that for customers to be eligible for reimbursement under the program, you must have “Proof of Payment” that you paid to repair or replace a cracked or bent wheel on your Corvette within an extended warranty period of 4 Years/48,000 Miles from the New Vehicle Limited Warranty start date of your vehicle. The amount of the reimbursement depends on whether the repair or replacement was performed by a GM authorized dealer, the type of supporting documentation, and when the repair/replacement occurred.

The owner must submit a Proof of Payment which includes service records, receipts or invoices. They are also accepting canceled checks, payment card records or other bank record as “Proof of Payment.”

There are two types of Supporting Documentation that also must be submitted. The first type are service records, receipts, or invoices that state the wheel repair or replacement was performed for a bent or cracked wheel and there was no impact damage. If you don’t have any service records that support that, you can alternately offer a sworn statement under penalty of perjury by the owner saying the vehicle received a wheel repair or replacement for a bent or cracked wheel, and that to the best of your understanding that it was performed for reasons other than damage caused by impacts or road hazards.

The letter goes on to say that if you paid to repair or replace a bent or cracked wheel during the extended warranty period and you submit Proof of Payment plus supporting evidence from a GM authorized dealer, you will be reimbursed for 100% of your out-of-pocket costs. Should you not have the supporting evidence, but still submit Proof of Payment and the Supporting Affidavit, you may be eligible to receive an alternative remedy, but what that may be isn’t stated in the letter.

There is obviously a lot of legalese language in this letter, so govern yourselves accordingly! You have just 180 days to submit your claim and the deadline is January 25, 2025. We received this copy of the full letter and are sharing it here:

  1. I have not had any issues with the wheels on my 2017 Z06 with Z07 package. The wheels I have are not the “split” 10 spoke. I have the Blade 10 spoke black with machine groove. I don’t see these wheels on any other C7’s. Are these also prone to cracking/bending? I have hit a few hard potholes but never a problem.

  2. I had to replace one of mine but it was in year 5 – so I can’t take advantage of this. At least they’re offering up to cover those who can take advantage

  3. It’s damn time gm steps up. But how many will be able to take advantage of the reimbursement?

  4. I just got new tires and was told I have 2 bent rims on my Grand Sport. Car has been babied, no reason for bent wheels except inferior product. Past 4 years old though, so no relief for me. Wheels should last longer than 25,000 miles. Ridiculous.

  5. Always something with Corporations. It’s about time they at least TRIED to do something, maybe to little to late. GM has dropped the ball in a lot of areas, to bad.

  6. This is most likely a cheap way to get the class action lawsuit dismissed. See judge, we are taking action to correct the problem!

    Shameful…

  7. Several issues with this, I received my letter today. I am in my 5th year, 8 months ago when I had a cracked rear wheel, none were available. I had one on order for over a month with still no date when I would get one. National back order! Not wanting to be stranded, I had to resort to an aftermarket set of wheels. Is GM going to reimburse me for the cost of those plus the aggravation of trying to locate and order a replacement?

  8. Too late now.. why would people repair a crack wheel when it’s gonna crack again at different areas. This should’ve been taken care of back in 2015. This letter is just for them to clear their lawsuits.

  9. Lucky so far on my 2019 GS. My insurance said they would replace bad wheels due to road hazard, wink wink. The wheels GM made still stink.

  10. I take this, as I received one after getting one replaced in May(year 6,but only 15,000 miles),that the extended warranty starts after the 3 year old original warranty! So that would go to 2024?And also ,where are the class actions suit at this point?last update I saw was from 2022.

  11. I put new tires on my 2017 Z06 at 22,000 miles and the wheels still look fine. I did put a plan in place if they crack. I have another complete set of factory supplied chrome Z06 wheels from a friends 2017 Z06, who had them pulled off by the dealer before he took delivery. He wanted the black wheels instead, so the dealer boxed up the chrome wheels and I bought them from him for $800. Not cheap, but its nice to have an option in place for future needs if they arise.

  12. I’ve had 4 cracked rims on my 2018 Grand sport. Cost me about $200 each time to repair. Three on the front and one on the rear. These rims are crap.

  13. This is 100% true with my Grand Sport and was also the case with my 2014 Stingray. In 7 years I had approximately 15-20 cracked rims of which thank goodness I had the wheel and tire insurance but still paid for several out of pocket.

  14. Bought a used 2018 z06 in 2023 and long behold wheels cracked. Replaced with forged aluminum. Won’t be getting reimbursed, that’s for damn sure.

  15. It’s about time!
I own a 2019 GS and one wheel cracked and the other three warped within three years. I am definitely going to submit my repair and replacement proof. GM dragged this out way to long.

  16. I brought my car to the dealership and they said my back 2 rims had cracks. This was in year 5, they told me there was no warranty. They gave me a price of $2500 for just the rims not including the labor. I am still deciding as I am worried the new wheels will also Crack. They should honor for 10 years like most recalls are and replace them free of charge.

  17. I’m the 2nd owner of a 2017 Grand Sport and received the notice. When replacing tires a month ago, was told all 4 wheels are bent. I had the wheels replaced, but outside the 4 year window 🙁. RATZ!

  18. I had a New 2016 zo6 and had the chrome wheels replaced by dealership. When wheels arrived I refused the wheels because they were just as bad as the wheels on my car. Next set came in and they were chipped as the previous sets. GM just playing games with customers like all the rest. THEY ARE LIARS AND CROOKS AND THEY WONDER WHY CUSTOMERS ARE UPSET. THEY GET AWAY WITH MURDER LIKE ALWAYS

  19. My 2019 Grand Sport only has 1,800 miles. I won’t be covered If I find that I have a bad wheel.🤨

  20. My 2019 GS started a slow leak on Pass Rear within 500 miles, it would steadily lose air and I’d have to top it up every few months. When I replaced the tire at 25K, found the crack and replaced the wheel. Its just like the picture above, the inner lip. I’m under extended warranty. I am betting they’ll decide not to repay me though.

  21. My 2019 GS had bent wheels, repaired under the Tire/Wheel Insurance, each year for four years. Then the rear wheels cracked and were replaced under the Insurance. Finally got so upset with the crap GM wheels that I ordered fully forged Forgelines and magic — no wheel issues since! Thanks GM.

  22. I’m glad GM decided to make things right with their customers. I replaced two rims (10/2019 and 10/2020). Thankfully I have proof of payment for both totaling $1700+.

  23. I owned 2 diff Z06’s that both ended up with cracks on the inner lip of the wheels. I was a certified GM mechanic for 24yrs, now if you own a vette that had 1 crack out of the 4 wheels I can almost promise you that more cracks will show up in the other wheels in time and they are not to be trusted as the 4 wheels on your vette were all made at the same time out of the same lame mix of metals that crack and if you did only have 1 crack and replaced all 4 then GM should pay for all 4 as its not your fault that you could not trust the other 3 wheels. Also its foolish to go to GM for replacement wheels because you are buying new wheels that are most likely made of the same alloy as your old cracking wheels. Buy identical new wheels threw (factory reproductions) $1650 for all 4, ive bought 6 diff sets from them, no problems
