It was over a year ago that we first heard the fantastic story of how several early Corvette enthusiasts led by Corey Peterson deduced that a 1953 Corvette that had been abandoned at restoration shop in Oklahoma was in fact the very first retail Corvette, VIN 001. For those of us waiting to hear more, it’s time to set your DVRs for Saturday at 10:00 AM ET.
The story about Corey and the VIN 001 1953 Corvette is set to told on Mecum Presents: Automotive Archeology which airs on MotorTrendTV or you can stream it on MAX.
It’s always been said that the first two 1953 Corvettes were taken by GM Engineers and destroyed during testing. But that doesn’t appear to be the case if the research holds up. The quick story is that internal documentation identified the VIN 001 Corvette as GM Shop Order 3950. Later documentation shows several engineering updates were actually made to #3950 and the abandoned car that Corey found has all those same updates.
We’re excited to learn more about this incredible find and agree that it would be the most significant discovery in Corvette’s 71 years. Here’s a preview of the show:
