With a big smile on his face, Davis Riley couldn’t resist revving up the powerful engine as he sat behind the wheel of his 1975 Corvette Stingray restomod for the first time.

After all, the custom Tartan Plaid interior of his cool new ride was a perfect match for the winner’s jacket he had just put on after taking a five-stroke victory Sunday in the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Ironically, the 28-year-old former University of Alabama star wasn’t even sure he would be able to focus on golf at all, what with his older sister Caroline in the hospital recovering from brain surgery to successfully remove a benign tumor just a week earlier.

In the end, though, with his sister’s full encouragement to remain in the tournament, Riley came through with an impressive performance, shooting a final round 70 to finish 14-under par for the tournament, trouncing runners-up Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 player in the world, and Keegan Bradley.

Besides the first-place prize of a cool $1.638 million, Riley also received another pretty nice prize in the form of the ’75 Corvette, which had undergone a complete transformation by County Corvettes of West Chester, Pennsylvania.

“We set out to build the best 1975 Corvette that’s out there,” explains Jed Stewart of County Corvettes. “Our body shop’s a phenomenal team. They worked hard to totally restore the body from top to bottom. This is a brand new car.”

After stripping the car down to the bare fiberglass and repairing all the issues with the original body, the shop added a new front bumper from a later-model Corvette and a new rear bumper from an ’80 Corvette with an integrated spoiler, along with a customized LT1 hood. Another custom touch is the “SCHWAB” badging on the rear bumper in place of the stock “CORVETTE,” not to mention the bespoke “Schwab Blue” paint job loosely based on Aston Martin’s Glacier Blue Metallic with reduced metallic flake and added pearl.

Mechanically, the ’75 doesn’t resemble the stock Corvette that originally left the St. Louis factory nearly 50 years ago, with a Custom Street Shop chassis, Wilwood disc brakes, a custom-tuned GM LS3 6.2-liter 450-horsepower V8 engine with custom air intake, headers, and stainless exhaust, and a 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission with a Lokar sports shifter that can act as a manual of sorts.

Inside, Elite Custom Interiors of Coatesville, Pennsylvania knocked it out of the park with a hand-stitched Saddle Tan leather interior punctuated by Tartan Plaid inserts in the seats and on the center console and shifter boot. The car also has an Alpine Touchscreen sound system with a backup camera and custom speakers, along with Dakota Digital gauges, air conditioning, and LED lights.

“Everything a modern car comes with,” Stewart points out, “we’ve integrated into the older car.”

Stewart says he is “extremely happy” with the way the ’75 restomod turned out, adding he’s “very proud” of his team for their efforts on the car.

“It’s very exciting that it’ll be in such a public showcase at Colonial Country Club for the world to see,” he said before the tournament. “I’m excited to show off our work.”

Stewart also had a few words of advice for Riley. “My message to the winner,” he says, “would be I hope you enjoy the car. I hope you get a chance to take it out and drive it and really put it through its paces. That’s what we build them for – we build ‘em for fun and to be used.”
