Corvettes for Sale: 34K-Mile 1966 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible on eBay

It’s not every day you run across a 1966 Corvette that can trace its history all the way back through all three of its owners.

But this ’66 Sting Ray convertible with only 33,934 miles fits the bill, and a fourth owner may soon be able to place his or her name on the title.

The current owner admits he doesn’t have to part with the car but feels it’s his time in life to downsize and pass his great cars along to the next generation.

Thus, he’s placed this Sunfire Yellow convertible with a matching hardtop up for sale on eBay, where the high bid has hit $49,900 with the auction coming to an end Sunday night.

This car’s story begins on Aug. 16, 1966 when the original owner, Clifford H. Washington, purchased it new from Courtesy Chevrolet in San Jose, California. Mr. Washington had moved to California in the late 1940s and was a long-time resident of Carmel Valley and a chef at Will’s Fargo Restaurant. For health reasons, he eventually had to move to San Diego to be closer to his daughter before passing away at age 87 on Dec. 8, 2006.

His daughter wound up selling the car to a specialty Corvette store, where the second owner purchased it in early 2011. The current owner then acquired the car in 2019 and says he has kept it in a climate-controlled shop with the rest of his small collection of cars ever since, mostly driving it to local Corvette shows and other meets. “My wife and I like to drive it on Sunday afternoons when weather permits for short outings in the country where we live,” he adds.

And those drives are spectacular. “This little car starts, runs, and drives like brand new,” he says in the detailed listing. “Everything and I mean everything works as it should. It never overheats and has the best oil pressure I have seen on any older car. The gauge has 60 lbs. maximum and when started cold the needle sets right on 60. As it warms up it will idle on about 40 until you touch the gas and once again it jumps to 60 where it remains until the engine idles again.”

Speaking of the engine, the original 327/300 horsepower V8 engine is still in place, connected to the original four-speed manual transmission.

“Of course, all numbers match, including the carburetor, distributor, radiator, the overflow tank, engine, transmission, etc.,” he says.

The undercarriage is also said to be all original with virgin floors. “The frame and other parts have not been spray painted black to hide anything. What you will see is a pristine underside with no rust or damage of any kind. The engine, trans, and rear end have not been painted, and all are in original condition as well,” he notes.

Through the years, of course, parts like spark plugs, points and condenser, and plug wires have been updated, as well as the rear strut rods with a new adjustable type. As soon as he bought the car, the seller had a full four-wheel alignment done, along with a new exhaust system using genuine GM Corvette replacement mufflers and chrome tips as well as a complete four-wheel brake job that included rebuilding all four calipers, replacing rubber hoses, rebuilding the emergency brake system including cables, and flushing the master cylinder and all lines.

Inside, as you might expect with 34,000 miles, the car is in excellent condition, with everything still working as expected, including all gauges, all lights and signaling devices, heater and defrost, AM/FM radio, and wipers. That even includes – gasp – the much-maligned clock, believe it or not!

Being an unrestored survivor, the car does have some imperfections, including a wiper mark on the windshield. That 57-year-old original paint still shines nicely, however, with only the front valance having to be repainted years ago because of a possible run-in with a curb. Some of the rubber pieces are showing their age, but the owner is including a complete body/convertible top weatherstrip kit with the sale.

“The rare Mid Year Corvettes that have rare equipment and/or a great history such as this one are gaining in value almost quarterly,” the seller concludes, “and continue to be a great investment.”

  1. This is truly a rare to find unrestored survivor C2 with everything still working on it like it should.

  2. I have always loved that yellow on this car and Chevy 2. I remember as a kid looking in the window and seeing 160 as mph. I thought that to be so exciting!

  3. I agree..hard to believe that the car still works..327 300 is a good motor…I have a 68 motor..they are good..as for that carb..you can have.
