Corvettes for Sale: 454-powered 1968 Corvette Coupe on Bring a Trailer

This 1968 Corvette Stingray coupe may have been restored some 25 years ago, but it certainly doesn’t look like it, at least in photos.

Now, this first-year C3 is looking for a new home on Bring a Trailer, where surprisingly the high bid so far is only $5,700. On the other hand, the auction will run for six more days, leaving plenty of time for enthusiasts to send that number soaring higher.

What’s not to like about a vintage red Corvette, especially one that hides a powerful 454 engine under the hood and has a four-speed manual transmission to boot? Installed by an earlier owner, the big block presents nicely with dual electric fans, a Mallory distributor, and a chrome air cleaner and valve covers. (It’s definitely not original since the only engine sizes available that year were the 327 and 427.)

The car left the St. Louis factory wearing Silverstone Silver, based on the trim tags, but it’s been subsequently repainted in a nice shade of red sometime in the 1990s.

The current owner has continued the refurbishing, replacing the black seat covers, door panels, wiring harnesses, brake master cylinder, rear wheel bearings, ignition coil, spark plugs, and battery.

Other features include four-wheel disc brakes, removable T-top panels in body color, power steering, AM/FM radio, and heater. Since this car is in Washington state, an air conditioner might not be a necessity, but in the South where Corvette Blogger is based, the missing compressor on this car would definitely need to be installed again.

What’s your take on this updated ’68 Stingray, one of 28,566 built that year, including 9,936 coupes and 18,630 convertibles?

  1. Not being an original big block isn’t that big of a deal, but if you would want to drive this on a regular basis those big blocks suck gasoline! I had a 1966 vette conv. 427, 390 hp and on the highway I could see the gas gauge moving! But it would need the A/C back since this vet came with air it doesn’t have the controls on the console for the vents to pull in outside air. This vet would be a hot box inside without something. Otherwise it does look in very good shape!
