Friends of a Canadian Corvette enthusiast turned out for one last rolling send-off at the funeral of 86-year-old George Fedak on Saturday afternoon.

“We made sure with the raindrops, all the guys from the club got together and we shammied it down for him,” said Gerry Jobin of the Misfits Car Club.

Led by George’s spiffy 1963 black split-window coupe, dozens of other classic cars and even a Rapid Blue C8 then escorted his casket from Windsor Chapel funeral home in Windsor, Ontario to his final resting place.

“This is a reflection of the love for George,” Jobin told CTV Windsor News reporter Rich Garton.

Fedak had bought his Corvette in 1966 and kept it in his garage for 40 years as he carefully saved up his dollars for a restoration. “He would put away $5 here, $10 there in an envelope,” his daughter Lori Graham said. “It’s not a cheap car to restore.”

A licensed mechanic at Chrysler for 38 years, Fedak – also a longtime Windsor Spitfires hockey fan – picked up a dream job as an usher at the WFCU Centre after he retired.

With more spare time now and the money saved up, he was finally able to begin the restoration in 2008, and when it was done eight years later, Fedak enjoyed showing the Corvette at several car shows in the area, including his very last one on July 23 at the Fogalar Furlan Club.

It was there that he won “Most Original in Show” honors before passing away that night “peacefully in his sleep” next to his wife of 65 years, according to his daughter.

“I’m just so thankful and appreciative of all the people over the years who stopped by and talked to my dad,” Graham said. “It just made those car shows extra special for him.”

Indeed, Jobin recalled last weekend’s show, where he watched George enjoy “his pop and his hamburger, which he loves,” and win one final trophy for his beloved ’63.

“It’s the only year Corvette that has a split window,” Jobin explained, “and it’s an absolutely beautiful car and that was his treasure. So when he pulled up to car shows, we’d just be in awe of him.”

Jobin recalled how George “smiled every chance he got” when he was around his vintage C2 Sting Ray “and you’d go up and ask him questions and he was eager all the time to talk about his car.”

“We know he’s looking down with love, we know it,” Jobin said. “Rest in peace, George. We’ll miss you!”

  1. Hey there, George did what most of us do dream about since we were kids, their own restoration of a Split-Window Corvette or any model of Corvettes, before it’s all too late to enjoy and drive in the sunshine.
Great job on a beautiful Corvette and hopefully, someone will drive that Split-Window all over Canada and the U.S. to tell the story of George and his perfect ’63 Corvette.
Thanks to Keith for bringing us this story. God bless all of you.
