[VIDEO] Watch the C8 Corvette Z06 Blitz the Hockenheimring

It’s Christmas in April for Corvette fans, except we’re running downstairs to find a WristRocket under the tree where the Red Ryder BB gun that we were dreaming of should have been. No, General Motors didn’t release its Nürburgring time for the hottest Corvette in history, but the C8 Corvette Z06 w/Z07 did go around another track in Germany this week. So, in the spirit of the fake Holidays, we’ll be grateful for what we can get!

Between 1926 and its last running in 2019, the GP Circuit at the Hockenheimring, along with its illustrious neighbor in Nürburg, were the two primary hosts of the German Formula One Grand Prix. The former is also the home test track of noted German car magazine, Sport Auto. Much like the signature locations of Laguna Seca for Motor Trend and VIR for Car and Driver, Hockenheim’s 17-turn, 2.842-mile ribbon of tarmac has accommodated hundreds of vehicles driven in anger by SA throughout the years.

In a video posted Thursday morning US time, Sport Auto showed off the most recent vehicle to tackle their favorite road course, the 2023 Corvette Z06, with all of the Z07 goodies! As you might expect, the German publication wastes no time talking or attempting any cutesy stunts; the in-car action of Uwe Sener’s hot lap begins the second you click “play.” When the dust settles less than 120 seconds later, the timer starts flashing 1:49.1 long enough for viewers to recover from the stimulation of the LT6’s flat-plane siren song.

TITLE

That time ties what a fellow by the name of Jochen Albig achieved in a 700 HP 991-Generation Porsche 911 GT2 RS. It is also tenths faster than SA’s own times for the current 911 Turbo and McLaren 600R, but it lags slightly behind what the mag was able to do in several cars that the Gemini Project left for dead on its home turf, such as the Mercedes-AMG GT-R and Lamborghini Huracán Evo. It also stops the clock more than a second after the 493-horse Cayman GT4 RS, that should have been an easy lunch for the Mid-engine Monster from the Motor City. Folks, while we enjoyed the video and the fact that we got some real on-track numbers for the C8Z, we can’t help but think that Sener might represent Sport Auto’s B-team. The cars that the Z06 has been playing with in all prior Stateside tests – the big boys like the McLaren 720S, AMG GT Black Series, Ferrari 488 Pista, and 992 GT3 – all completed the course in the 1:43 – 1:45 range, 4-6 seconds faster than the Z06, an eternity in any race, but especially when it’s just a single sub-three-mile lap that we’re talking about. All of the above metal, along with the record-holding McLaren Senna (1:40.79!), were piloted by SA’s varsity hot shoe, Christian Gebhardt.

For the sake of fairness, we suggest GM leaves the Z in Deutschland a little longer for Gebhardt to have a go. Maybe he can play Santa and visit the other home of the German GP for us while he’s at it!

  1. Ya I don’t think that dude was the greatest driver, didn’t seem like he was pushing it as hard as he could have. Doing a lot of sawing on the wheel, and compared to other vids he seems scared of it. Not very impressed, I think a better driver is needed.
