[VIDEO] 1965 Corvette Races a 1978 Camaro Z/28 in a Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race

Getting there is always half the fun in a Corvette … or a Camaro.

You might say the same for this new video posted by the wacky guys at Cars and Zebras featuring a contest at the 28th Annual Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race in 2022 between a 1965 Corvette with a rare L78 396 engine and a 1978 Camaro Z/28 with a much weaker 350 but with various, unspecified modern upgrades.

By the time you actually get to all the action between these two old-timers near the end of the video, you’ve been bombarded with the usual dose of unorthodox humor from C&Z, or exactly the kind of sophomoric humor that we were hoping for, in other words. (Full disclosure: we may be a little shell-shocked after just getting back from a crazy weekend at our first-ever Rod Run in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, full of big trucks and stacks of pancakes climbing into the heavens and classic rides like Chevy IIs with wild paint jobs and blowers slamming through the hoods.)

Back to the video at hand: This L78 Corvette features a big-block 396 engine that pumped out 425 horsepower – only 2,157 were ordered that year even though the option was just $292.70. Most folks opted for the less powerful – but also less expensive – L75 327/300 horsepower engine for $53.80 or the L79 327/350 for $107.60. (In defense of these original customers, this was during a time when the base price was just $4,321 so every dollar counted.)

No word on any improvements made to the Corvette since then, but since it was competing in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race category, the rules do allow for many modifications.

This ‘78 Camaro, meanwhile, came along when Chevy was just trying to keep its head above water, thanks to restrictive federal regulations, and this ’78 was pretty to look at but managed just 185 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque back in the day.

Judging by the results from this set of three drag races, however, this Camaro has undergone some serious modifications after a 16-year-old and his dad built it together. In fact, you may find it hard to believe, but it’s actually the teen behind the wheel in these races, and he does a fantastic job.

We definitely recommend watching this video, even if you don’t really care about the outcome. Trust us – it’s worth it just to bring a chuckle to your day and a smile to your face.

If you don’t want to watch, though, we’ll go ahead and spoil things for you. The Camaro actually wins the first race by half a second as the Corvette struggles off the line, but the C2 comes back for sub-14 second times for slim victories in the next two battles.

  1. I actually wanted to watch this video but the stupidity in it made me tune out within the first minute.

  2. A Chevy Corvette is a sports car, America’s only true sports car. A Camaro is a muscle car or pony car. You would think something called “Corvette Blogger” would know that.

  3. What a stupid waste of time. Should not of even been close, the Camaro is one of the slowest cars of that time to the point having the Z-28 badge was embarrassing. No I didn’t bother to watch it either. Come on you guys. At least it wasn’t the high maintenance bimbo for a change.
