[VIDEO] What's Faster? A 1978 Corvette with an L82 or a 1970 Mustang Boss 302

Here’s another fun video from the Cars and Zebras YouTube channel, whose content is mostly focused on following the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race Series. The series allows only limited modifications to participants’ vehicles, so the cars you see racing today are nearly identical to those cars which rolled off the assembly line back in the day.

Today’s race is a fun throwback featuring a ’70 Boss Mustang versus a 1978 Corvette with the L82. The Corvette is decked out in the Pace Car livery with Black over Silver with a silver interior and polished wheels with a red stripe. However, the “wild and crazy” narrator keeps referring to it as the 25th Anniversary model. Well, it’s that, too, so he’s not wrong!

Eight years separate these two vehicles, and my thinking was the 290 hp Ford already has a more powerful engine than the 220 hp from the L82, plus the Vette is saddled with a catalytic converter and other fuel economy measures.

The two American icons have two races, and the results are surprisingly close despite the gap you see in the featured photo above. That’s because the Vette got off the line quicker and crossed the finish line first, with the Mustang seemingly increasing in power towards the end of the run and it has the higher trap speeds to show for it.

Give it a watch, and then let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. A couple points:
While the 78 Vette certainly has cats and emission equipment, it’s putting out the 220 HP figure with all that equipment installed. Further, that’s an SAE net HP rating, whereas the 290 figure for the 70 Mustang is a gross HP figure–roughly 30% higher than the SAE net rating would’ve been for the same engine. So their outputs are actually pretty similar. The Corvette also weighs about 230 lb more than the Mustang.

  2. Vette weighs more then the Stang???? I find that hard to believe, fiberglass vs metal?
