[VIDEO] Car and Driver Rides in the 2024 Corvette E-Ray


Chevrolet held an influencer round-up last week in Detroit staring the 2024 Corvette E-Ray and Carlos Lago of Car and Driver was there.

In this video, Carlos does a walkaround of a Cacti Green Corvette E-Ray that’s set up with some rather harsh lighting, so we don’t really get a good feel for the color in those conditions. But we do get a great look at the E-Ray’s cut-away chassis display that shows both the Ultimum battery pack loaded in the Corvette’s central tunnel that runs down the middle of the car, and the very compact drive motor that actually resides behind the Frunk. Carlos points out that the E-Ray was planned from the very beginning of C8 production, and therefore all the components and their packaging were already accounted for, so nothing was moved or changed after the design phase.

Once the walkaround is completed, Carlos heads out the skid pad where he gets to ride along in the new Corvette. Starting in stealth mode, the car is accelerated slowly, and you can hear the whine from the electric motor has it powers the car. Once it gets to the 45 MPH, the flying start happens, which is what engineers call when the LT2 motor is woken up and engaged. A launch control launch is done, and you can clearly hear the electric motor working in combination with the ICE V8 to propel the car. Like the Z06, the E-Ray’s launch control settings can be modified for provided the best launch based on the road conditions.

As for lapping on the track, that battery isn’t very big, but Chevrolet engineers told Carlos that it will stay charged as long as you are lapping on a smallish road course. As you get to higher speed road courses like VIR or even the Nurburgring, battery depletion may become can issue. Carlos says that Car and Driver will be anxious to test that at their next Lightning Lap test a Virginia International Raceway.

Chevy says the battery recharges very quickly and it’s designed to do that because as Carlos says, it’s more of a performance-adder instead of an efficiency-adder. The eAWD system also adds traction during inclement weather as well, so a lot of interesting things there for sure. Carlos says one thing it can’t do is a front-drive or electric-only burnout.

The 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray enters the fray as the first Vette ever to have all-wheel drive and a hybrid powertrain. The E-Ray’s 160-hp front-mounted electric motor and 495-hp mid-mounted small-block V-8 combine for 655 horses. Along with the regular Stingray’s heart, the hybrid Corvette has the Z06’s wide hips and many other interesting technical bits. Carlos Lago explains more.

  2. Idiotic comment.
    That beautiful normally aspirated C8 ZO6 needs to live forever. The E-Ray is a nice compromise, but, come on, what does it accomplish in the big scheme of things. Save the planet? Really?
    The technology is marvelous, especially the all wheel drive, but the weight penalty is a problem. And all the compromises of EV’s remain. If this takes over the world, you can have it.
    I’ll keep my C7 Z06 manual and my 67 Stingray until I die.. If I can ever get a C8 ZO6 I will by God.
