They may be old, but don’t call them geezers.

That’s the takeaway from this entertaining series of stock drag races between a couple of vintage four-speed manual transmission cars – a 1970 Chevrolet Corvette 454 and a 1968 Buick GS 400 at Mid Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, Michigan.

Cars and Zebras YouTube channel serve up the entertaining action, complete with some humorous descriptions of all the action. Be sure to take a look as this is not your typical boring race video.

The Corvette 454 engine was a $290 option chosen by 4,473 customers – good for 390 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque. Car and Driver magazine tested a similar car but with an automatic transmission and was able to cover the quarter-mile in 15.0 seconds while racing 0 to 60 in 7.0 seconds.

The Buick GS 400, meanwhile, had a 400 cubic inch engine that produced 340 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. Hot Rod managed a 0 to 60 time of 7.5 seconds and a 14.78 second quarter-mile at 94 mph back in the day.

Both of these cars are pretty heavy, with the Corvette weighing 3,778 lbs., and the Buick tipping the scales at 3,970 lbs., both figures including the driver.

So how did these two behemoths compare in the races?

Well, the Corvette won the first round with a time of 13.86 seconds at 101.14 mph, compared to the 14.37 at 99.19 mph for the Buick (though he may have missed a gear early on).

After switching lanes, the Buick emerged the winner this time with a time of 13.80 to the 13.79 for the Corvette. The host issued a reminder that the ET does not include reaction time so in a situation like this, the Buick can take home the win even though their ET was slightly worse and it’s because the reaction time was so good, they were able to cross the finish line first.

Switching lanes again for the rubber race, the Buick took an easy win, 13.75 at 100.21, to the 13.88 at 101.33 for the Corvette (who left 0.02 seconds early, giving an automatic win to the Buick).

  1. I have always held the Buick GSX in high regard. They were the factory sleeper, Grandpa’s Buick kicking our butts. I loved those days.
Now it takes my Z06 to get my heart rate up, way up.

  2. The Vette is lighter and has more power, something seems wrong here. Guess I should watch the vid. The Buicks are known for torque and lot’s of it. Goes to show you, just because on paper you should win doesn’t mean it happens that way in the real world. Times have changed, my 11′ GS manual would blow the doors off of both cars and I get 30+ MPG. Still cool though.
