The 34-year-old driver of this Torch Red C7 Corvette Z06 lost his life Tuesday afternoon when his car was split in half after crashing into a utility pole in Macomb County, Michigan, part of northern Metro Detroit.

The accident could have been even worse, however, as the Corvette was said to have been trying to pass a box truck when it slammed into the pole, sending a huge transformer crashing onto the roof and through the windshield of the truck. That driver told Detroit Fox 2 News he too would have been killed if he had been leaning forward instead of sitting up straight. Fortunately, he was thin enough to exit the truck on his own afterwards.

The crash happened about 1 p.m. on Romeo Plank at 26 Mile in Ray Township, an area that has been a problem for years, according to neighbors.

“It’s incredible. It’s incredible, but the speeds around here are pretty high. People are always in a hurry,” said Mary Greet, talking to Fox 2 News at the scene. “It’s just an act of God that anyone made it out.”

Greet was amazed that the box truck driver avoided being killed in the crash.

“When I saw that, my heart just dropped to my stomach,” Greet said. “I am just amazed that he made it out, that he jumped out of that van like he did.”

The Corvette wound up cut in half, and the mangled vehicle can be seen in the video being hauled away on a flatbed truck several hours after the crash Tuesday night. DTE crews worked for hours to secure downed power lines, though a reporter for Fox 2 News said it is unclear if the truck driver had been at risk of being shocked by the transformer when he exited the vehicle.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.

  1. A genuine tragedy that could have been even worse. The report details seem to point to the possibility that the C7’s driver may have had too much speed in his attempt to pass the slower box truck when he lost control of the Corvette and subsequently lost his life in the resulting crash into the power pole.
It’s very sad and serves up yet another warning about the potential of speed to kill…

  2. Oct. 12—Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Macomb Township man who died Tuesday after his Chevrolet Corvette crashed into a utility pole in northern Macomb County.

Daniel Evola, 34, was attempting to pass a box truck on Romeo Plank Road in Ray Township when he lost control of the car and crashed into the pole, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. He was trapped inside the Corvette while live wires before were removed.

“Both the driver of the box truck and an independent witness stated the Corvette was attempting to pass the box truck on northbound Romeo Plank when it appeared to lose control and spin out, striking the utility pole,” Sgt. Renee Yax said in a statement.

The horrific crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on Romeo Plank, north of 26 Mile Road.

Deputies responding to 911 calls found the heavily damaged Corvette wrapped around a utility pole. Evola was in the driver’s seat breathing heavily, Yax said.

The Corvette had struck a pole causing live wires to fall to the ground.

Authorities said the box truck stopped behind the Corvette as the utility police snapped, causing the transformer to fall through the through the windshield of the white box truck.

The truck driver was identified as a 52-year-old Utica resident, who deputies said was alert and conscious. He declined medical attention.

The live wires from the utility pole landed near the Corvette, preventing first responders from getting access to Evola, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Once firefighters were able to remove the wires, they were able to remove Evola from the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Crash Team arrived at the scene and began their investigation. Deputies said the roadway was shut down for several hours while the investigation was completed and DTE repaired the utility pole.

Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini knows Evola’s family and had attended his wedding. He said he was devastated when he heard of the incident.

“Danny was a great young kid who comes from a really good, community-minded family,” Forlini said. “My heart goes out to his wife and his family.”

Evola had worked at Giovanni Bakery in Clinton Township. He is survived by three children and his wife, who is pregnant with the couple’s baby, friends said.

  3. I live in the area and drive through this intersection regularly. The driver of the Corvette attempting to pass the box truck at this location was completely irresponsible. It is miraculous that the driver of the truck survived and that no other people were injured or killed. Now his young wife is a widow and his three children (with one on the way) will grow up without a dad. All because he was in a hurry and couldn’t handle his grown up hot wheel.

  4. This is horrible..God bless you young man . I am a corvette owner and I drive in a matter some would not consider to be safe .let’s not make this more of a tragedy than it already is .corvettes are fast and fun .I get it .he lost his life . Who knows maybe I will too but thats a chance im willing to take to live and have fun .my heart goes out to all his family and his wife and child .I’m sorry for your pain .truly I am .God bless you all to mom and dad .God’s with you no doubt in my mind..I’m sorry for your loss and am mourning along with you .I know your son loves you very much .and you will see him again one day .be strong .
