The older I get, the more I wish I had had the foresight to buy up every C2 Corvette I could find back in the late 1970s. For what I paid for my first Corvette, a 1980, for example, I could have bought two or three C2s in very nice condition.
Today, we tell you about another person who DID have that kind of foresight. In fact, the gentleman says he bought this 1965 Corvette convertible in 1972 and has loved it ever since, even treating it to a frame-off restoration in 1992. Likely getting on up there in years now, the seller is now offering his car at no reserve in an eBay auction slated to end Monday night.
So far, the high bid is $43,650.
That’s still a lot of money, but nowhere near the $100,000-plus these C2s can bring in mint condition.
That means an OCD person like me wouldn’t be afraid to drive it to the grocery store or the Dollar General and worry about a buggy plowing into the fender.
Well, who are we kidding? I’d still be worried about that, but if it did happen that way, I wouldn’t be quite as mortified as I would be with a trailer queen.
A few details about this car. The body is described as “original with the usual repairs here and there,” and the paint “looks great from 20 feet but does have some flaws.” By the way, it was originally the uber-popular Glen Green before being repainted silver, which we actually prefer but that’s just a personal choice, isn’t it?
The convertible top is said to be in “excellent” condition, and the original front bumpers with brackets and spare tire carrier are included with the sale.
Mechanically, a rebuilt 350 V8 has been installed and still runs “excellent.” For the purists out there, the original 327 engine is included with the deal so it could be restored back to stock if desired. The original Muncie four-speed manual transmission “shifts flawlessly.”
“Mechanically, the car is spot on,” the listing insists. “Everything seems to function as it should. Everything mechanical has been either replaced with new or rebuilt.”
Underneath, the frame and birdcage are described as “straight and rust free,” while up above, the black interior remains in “very nice” shape, meaning you wouldn’t be embarrassed for someone to peek inside while you’re in the Dollar General.
If you’re looking for a show car, look past this one, the seller admits. “But if you want something you can jump in and drive now without worrying everywhere you go, this is it,” he says, calling it an excellent driver quality Mid Year Corvette ready to enjoy today.
