The 50th annual Bloomington Gold event is just a week away now and show organizers are finalizing all the small details for the Granddaddy of Corvette shows. Some of those details include completing the lineup of top notch Corvettes for the Gold Collection.
The Gold Collection traces its roots back to 1984 when it debuted as the Special Collection. Later it evolved into the Great Hall, and now, the Gold Collection. Each year the display features a new theme and select cars participate strictly on an invitation-only basis. The theme of this year’s Gold Collection is A Salute to the Gold Collection as Bloomington pays homage to 50 years of their show plus nearly 40 years of one of their anchor events.
In the most recent edition of their Gold REView magazine, Bloomington Gold gives us a sneak peek at the Gold Collection lineup. As you can see below the cars cover the full gamut of our hobby. The early cars lean toward the racing side as we see the 1956 SR2 and the famous 1960 Lemans Cunningham car along with its privateer teammate, the number 4 car from that same race. When do suppose was that last time these 2 cars were together?
With the midyears we see a development L88 and the red 1967 L88 with 12 original miles, and a right hand drive 1963 Z06. The early C3 cars feature some of the most famous Corvette option codes of all time including L88, ZL1, ZR1, ZR2, and LS6. Later C2’s feature a 1978 pace car and a 1975 convertible. Later model Corvettes are represented by a brand new 1990 ZR1, a Callaway ZR1, 1996 export Grand Sport, and the 2001 C5.R racer driven by Dale Earnhardt.
What could possibly make this display even better? How about 1 of the 5 original Grand Sports? That’s right. In addition to the stellar cars noted above, the Gold Collection will contain 1963 Grand Sport #4 coming all the way from Naples, Florida. If we recall correctly, we last saw a Grand Sport at Bloomington in 2013’s Great Hall.
The Gold Collection will be formally unveiled at 6pm on Thursday, June 9th during the Gold Gala event. Tickets for the Gold Gala are $20 each and can be purchased here. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
