National Corvette Museum President and CEO Sharon Brawner announced today that Director of Collections and Senior Curator Derek E. Moore has resigned from his position “to take a step back from the rigors of senior leadership responsibilities and spend more quality time with his young family.”

After nearly two decades of moving up the ranks in the automotive museum field, Moore will become Curator at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, where he will return to day-to-day, hands-on collections work with their expansive and unique collection, according to Brawner’s letter.

His new job will be a change of pace for Moore as it is one of the few museums in the U.S. to specialize in European cars. According to its website, some cars are in showroom condition, while others represent typical aging. Efforts are made to restore each vehicle to near-original specifications.

“I take with me so much that I have learned here at the NCM, knowing that the personal and professional growth I have experienced will continue with me throughout the rest of my career,” said Moore, who had become one of the more visible faces of the NCM in person and on the Web during his time there, especially in videos where members had donated their cars to the Museum. “As I’ll be staying in the Bowling Green/Nashville area, I hope to continue making memories with the many friends I have made at the Museum and in the Corvette community for years to come. I want to thank all of you for our work here together at the NCM, and I cannot wait to see how this institution grows moving forward into the future.”

Moore came to the NCM with an impressive background. Most recently, he had been Crawford Curator of Transportation History at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio. His duties there included researching the history of automobiles and aviation of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio and developing exhibits and programming on the history of automobiles, aircraft, and related transportation technologies. He was also responsible for the conservation and preservation of the 150-plus collection of historic vehicles and aircraft, which should prove valuable in taking care of the NCM’s growing number of cars.

Moore previously served as Conservation Specialist of the Transportation Collection at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan and interned at the Alfred P. Sloan Museum in Flint, Mich.

In her letter to NCM donors and members, Brawner praised Moore for “an outstanding job guiding the NCM Collections team with passion and dedication to our mission every day,” adding that he has influenced the Museum’s thinking on exhibits, educated “us on untold stories in Corvette and automotive history,” and helped the NCM begin the process of earning American Alliance of Museums accreditation.

Moore is helping Brawner and the NCM team identify candidates to replace him. “We will utilize national museum search options through the American Alliance of Museums and the National Association of Automotive Museums organization, and others to recruit qualified candidates for our review,” she said.

Addressing NCM donors and members, Blauser advised them to contact Collections Registrar Leah Craig about any collections or exhibits needs at 270-777-4562 or [email protected], or Curator of Exhibitions Bob Bubnis about exhibition questions at 270-467-8805 or [email protected].
