One of the aspects of the new 2023 Corvette Z06 that we cannot wait to experience is driving the Z06 with its lighter carbon fiber wheels. Roughly 40 lbs of unsprung weight are saved with the carbon fiber wheels and Chevy engineers have made the steering a bit more responsive due to the lighter wheels. But the downside to having carbon fiber wheels on the car is the possibility of damaging them from a pothole, curb, or another road hazard.

Our friend Chet from Aerolarri sent me these pics first shared to the C8 Corvette Owners Facebook Page by Measha Scot showing a Torch Red Z06 bedded down for the night at a hotel in Yuma. There are multiple Z06s in the lot so we’re thinking the Corvette engineering team is continuing its testing and validation. As I cycled through the photos, my eyes caught this road rash damage to the top of the rim:

I know, I know…looks expensive! And the downside to damaged carbon fiber is that there really is no fixing that. So for those of you thinking seriously about carbon fiber wheels for your daily driver, keep that in mind.

Measha also managed to capture pics of a Hypersonic Gray Coupe and another Red Z06 behind it.

Back in 2020, YouTuber Speed Phenom showed what can happen when carbon fiber wheels take a hard hit. A buddy of his with a Ford Shelby GT500 was wearing Carbon Revolution’s carbon fiber wheels and one had shattered after an impact and left pieces of the pricey composite material littered across the road.

  1. I’m aware of a large number of GT350R owners that replace and store their car’s CF wheels to avoid damage. Most are flippers and neither plan to track or put many miles on their Mustang.
If you’re a serious track fiend trying to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their Z06, then it may make sense. Or a flipper that’s speculating that the Z06 CF wheels will bring a premium…go for it. However, if you’re like most of us just looking to cruise and occasionally romp your Z06 to hear that cross plane crank V8 scream…I’m not sure CF wheels $$$$$ are the way to go. ?

  2. The guy needs a set of those springy dingy curb feeler thingies. Remember those from the 50’s and 60’s? A heck of a lot cheaper than a new carbon wheel.

  3. Hard pass on the CF wheels here. And, yes, I do remember the curb feelers. Mostly seen on pimped out Caddies with fuzzy dice hanging from the rear view mirrors.

  4. It might have been on purpose to test the wheel. They know it’s going to happen and probably want to see how safe it still is to get back home.
