Literally reinventing the wheel has paid big dividends for the company that will be supplying high-tech carbon fiber wheels for the forthcoming 2023 Corvette Z06.
Founded 15 years ago, Carbon Revolution is already celebrating the production of its 50,000th automotive wheel, which will be offered as an option for the rear of the new mid-engine Z06.
The 21-inch by 13-inch wheel – the company’s largest so far – also represents its first five-spoke design and reflects a five-year collaboration with GM and Carbon Revolution designers and engineers.
Enthusiasts got their first look at the wheel in October when the Z06 itself was revealed.
“While this Corvette wheel represents a milestone for Carbon Revolution, we are exceptionally proud of all the OEM wheels we have produced to-date for Ford, Ferrari, Renault and General Motors,” Carbon Revolution CEO Jake Dingle said.
The wheels will be offered as part of the Z07 package on the coupe and convertible models and will slice 41 pounds off the Corvette Z06’s unsprung mass.
“To have collaborated with GM to create the carbon fiber wheel for the new Z06 has been a great honor,” Dingle said. “The performance capabilities of the Z06, as well as the decision to create a five-spoke wheel design, meant that our engineering teams had to drive our world-leading carbon fiber wheel technology to new places for this project.”
Carbon Revolution engineers incorporated a feature called a “ski jump,” which diagonally connects the front of the spoke laminate with the back of the spoke laminate. This is the first time the team has included this technology in a production wheel. The technology improves the wheel’s performance while maintaining maximum weight savings.
After the reveal of the Z06 last year, Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter described the Carbon Revolution wheel as “much, much stronger” than an aluminum wheel.
“There’s actually lap time associated with putting carbon wheels on your car,” Juechter said, noting that lap times over a two-minute period would be 1 to 1.5 seconds lower, “equivalent to a fair horsepower increase.”
The wheels will be available in a clear coat option that exposes the carbon fiber weave and Carbon Revolution’s patent-pending Diamond Weave Technology finish. A painted variant will also be offered.
Carbon Revolution’s Waurn Ponds facility in Australia will manufacture the wheels, which will then be assembled in the U.S.
