Criswell Chevrolet’s Mike Furman delivers new Corvettes to his customers who come from all across the country to work with the nation’s top individual Corvette seller.
Mike kicks off this week’s post with a story from his younger salesman days of having to give the owner of a 1958 Corvette the hard truth about his car. This week’s new Corvette deliveries include those that happened at Criswell Chevrolet, the National Corvette Museum, and at the customer’s local Chevy dealer via a courtesy delivery. ~I always refer to the saying "Chance favors the prepared mind" which was coined by Louis Pasteur…Louis had a pretty good run as a microbiologist until his death in 1895.
Ask any of my 4,700+/- Corvette customers if I’m prepared for each and every delivery. My process has to be spot on to sell as many vehicles per month as I do especially since I’m certified to sell all 10 brands that Criswell Auto carries. Experience helps tremendously. Case in point…
~Below is a picture of me appraising a 1958 Corvette. I was 29 at the time! That picture is 31 years old and I was appraising a 31-year-old car. The Corvette was mint and fresh off a very nice restoration and had eyes. Except I noticed two things. It was an original Fuelie car but missing the Fuelie pieces. Only 1,511 of the 9,168 were fuelie’s that year so it was kinda important. I gave the trade-in value in which he was not pleased. I had said if it was stock as it came from the factory then I would agree with what he was seeking. I told him the two things I viewed right off the bat and he did not know it was incorrect. Fast forward 20 years later (2009) as I go on a test drive with a lady and she wanted to bring the vehicle to her home which was around the corner from Criswell…guess what was in the garage? Yup, that exact same Silver Blue 1958 Corvette! I didn’t even get out of the car and I asked her "Did you return it to stock as a Fuelie?" She was shocked and asked, "How do you know it was originally a Fuelie from 25 feet away?" I told her the story of the previous owner from 1989 and her husband walked out overhearing this conversation and remembered the guy telling him about what I found with my appraisal all those years ago. At least the guy sold it with full disclosure.

~Robert M. of Tolland, CT traded in his 2018 Corvette and the last time he brought his Father, this time Dad stayed home and Roberts’s son Brandon joined him for the 360 Mile trip. Robert factory ordered an Elkhart Lake Blue 2020 Corvette coupe with sky cool gray interior. To say the two of them were pumped up for the Corvette ride home is an understatement!

My favorite pic is the one of the Corvettes lined up on the front row at Harry Mann Chevrolet. That is impressive! But I can tell you of another dealer that was even more impressive. In 1971, I bought a Fathom Green ’69 Corvette L71 427/435 convertible from Colony Dodge in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The impressive part there was that even though they sold Dodges, they knew how strong the Corvette market was. And so their entire front line was ALWAYS nothing but used Corvettes. I traveled 75 miles to see their inventory just on word of mouth.
They continued to do this for years there. I got to know several people who had bought Corvettes from them.
I remember well that the asking price for the ’69 L71 was $4395. But my dad was with me since I was only 19 and he co-signed for the loan. We traded in the first Corvette I had gotten at age 18 which was a Nassau Blue ’66 L79 coupe. So, who knows what they gave me or what I paid? I don’t even remember the difference between them. I do remember my dad insisted that I make the loan period as short as possible. So he got it for one year!!!! ONE year??? My payments were $198/month!! That was thru Chrysler Credit Corporation. For a boy making $2/hour. On top of that, I had to pay my own insurance which was $406/year. And on top of that, I was driving a car that got about 8-10 MPG depending on my right foot.
That was one long year!
