A wrong-way crash involving a Corvette and a Jeep sent both drivers to a hospital in Tampa, Fla., early Wednesday.

While no arrests have been made, both drivers may have been impaired, according to a spokesman with the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver of the 2017 Jeep Cherokee, 70-year-old Walt Pfeifer of Valrico, Fla., was headed in the wrong direction in the eastbound lane of State Road 60 just after midnight.

Matthew Bell, 34, of Valrico was behind the wheel of his 2012 Corvette, going in the correct direction in the eastbound lane, when the two vehicles crashed head-on near Miller Road.

The Jeep overturned and rolled across the lanes before coming to a rest on the south shoulder, while the collision sent the Corvette spinning before it stopped in the median.

A photo from the scene shows the badly demolished Corvette, which appears to have no body panels remaining from the doors forward. One of its tires is resting in the passenger seat, and the engine is completely exposed.

Sgt. Steve Gaskins of the FHP said Bell, who was wearing his seatbelt, was left in critical condition after the wreck, while Pfeifer was not wearing his seatbelt and emerged in serious condition. Both drivers were carried to Tampa General Hospital.

The Highway Patrol is waiting for test results from both drivers and said charges are pending, though no arrests had been made as of Wednesday evening, according to a report at tampabay.com.

The eastbound lanes of State Road 60 reopened about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday after authorities completed their investigation.
