It’s time for Throwback Thursday where we feature vintage photos of Corvettes. In today’s feature, we have a series of pictures from 1959 when Chevrolet dealer Malcolm Konner took a group of buyers to St. Louis to tour the factory and pick up their new Corvettes.
Nearly every Sunday we publish Corvette seller Mike Furman’s “Delivery Dispatches“, a series of posts featuring his new Corvette deliveries from the week, as well as a bunch of vintage pics and barn finds of older Corvettes.
Mike got his start at Malcolm Konner Chevrolet, which at one time was the #1 Corvette dealer in the country. Mike recently shared these photos given to him by Malcolm’s son Gary Konner who also worked with Mike at the dealership.
In 1959 when the Corvette was just six years old, Malcolm Konner rounded up a group of Corvette customers, chartered a plane to fly to St Louis and toured the Corvette assembly plant. They also picked up their new Corvettes at the St. Louis plant and then did a road rally back to New Jersey! Talk about seeing the USA in a new Chevrolet!
We thought these photos to be significant enough that they deserved their own post and Throwback Thursday is the perfect day to take a walk back through Corvette history.
A really cool postscript to this story is that Malcolm’s son Gary replicated the Corvette buyers trip to the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in the spring of 1986. Waiting for them at the factory were 50 special edition 1986 Malcolm Konner Corvettes featuring the two-tone paint scheme and special badges. Following a tour of the plant, most of the Corvettes were driven back to New Jersey and the surrounding area by their new owners.
