Corvette Racing at Daytona: Start of a New Season

No easing into 2015 for two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs

  • Second season with Chevrolet Corvette C7.R in IMSA competition
  • Both Corvettes led in GT Le Mans class in last year’s Rolex 24
  • Corvette C7.R based on production Chevrolet Corvette Z06

DETROIT (Jan. 20, 2015) – The second season for the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R begins this weekend with Corvette Racing set for the 53rd Rolex 24 At Daytona and the start of the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Saturday’s start will be the second consecutive at the twice-around-the-clock race for the team, which prior to 2014 hadn’t raced at Daytona in 13 years.

Competitors in the Tudor United Sportscar Championship, such as Corvette Racing, put in long, hard hours at the racetrack and traveling around the country from spring until fall. Crews and drivers must endure hot weather, rainy weather, days away from their families, and unbelievable stress trying to make a sometimes cantankerous racecar do what they want it to do. Then, on top of all that, the sanctioning body can suddenly change the balance of performance parameters on your car to make everything that much more difficult.

Pratt and Miller, the award-winning team behind the Chevrolet Corvette’s factory-supported racing effort known simply as Corvette Racing, released an interesting new video last night that takes a deep dive into the philosophy of racing. In the opener, the narrator asks the age-old question of why go racing.

Why does Chevrolet race the Corvette: “Ultimately, it’s to build a better sports car.”

When Corvette Racing began their factory-backed effort in 1999, few if any truly expected the kind of dominating success that the racing team would come to embody. Looking back on 15 years of racing, the team has raced three different of generations of Corvettes from the C5-R to the C7.R. Along the way they earned the most all-time victories and 1-2 finishes in American Le Mans Series history including an ALMS-best 10 team championships, 10 manufacturer championships and seven class wins at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

But how well do you know Corvette Racing? This week IMSA put out these Five Things You Didn’t Know About Corvette Racing and there were a few items on the list that even the most diehard fan might not be aware of.

One of the hallmarks of the new 2015 Corvette Z06 and the C7.R Corvette race car is that they were developed together utilizing the lessons learned from the C6 Corvette and the C6.R race car.

In a new video by Chevrolet, Corvette Racing driver Tommy Milner and Corvette’s Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter talk about the transfer of technology from the racing program to the production Corvette.
