1969 Corvette L88 COPO Convertible

This 1969 Corvette L88 COPO Convertible made its presence known like no other car during last weekend’s Mecum auction in Kissimmee, Florida. When it fired up the race-prepped 427 cubic inch big block and rolled into the auction ring, the packed house was paying close attention. Here was a documented authentic factory L88 race car and Proteam Corvette wanted it sold!

Included in the documentation of this vintage racer was the tank sticker, early photos of the Corvette and its racing log books, trophies and awards. The tank sticker documents the L88 engine and special COPO request for this Corvette NOT to be equipped with the Big Brake options like all other L88 Corvettes, making it a one of one car.

The Corvette saw combat in SCCA events regularly from 1972-1976 and raced in such storied venues as Daytona and Sebring. It’s listed in the roster of cars that raced in the 24th Annual 12 hours of Sebring in 1976. The car is currently certified for SVRA vintage races.

Towards the end of the auction the race car seemed to stall at $300,000 but it only took another $5,000 to drop the reserve and sell the Corvette at $305,000. Tom Abrams of Reliable Transports was the buyer and is shown getting the Mecum treatment there at the end.
