A man behind the wheel of a suspected stolen Corvette lost his life after a collision left the car virtually unrecognizable as a Chevrolet sports car.

A photo on mynewsla.com shows the Corvette literally ripped to shreds next to a large tree, with one of the few recognizable parts being the hood.

The Corvette had been reported stolen in Mission Viejo, Calif., about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Lt. Wayne Rehnelt said deputies spotted the car about an hour later in Lake Forest, Calif., but the driver sped away from them when they attempted to pull him over.

Deputies discovered the deadly crash site about five or 10 minutes later, after the Corvette had collided with another vehicle near the intersection of Trabuco Road and Cherry Avenue.

Rehnelt said the driver of the Corvette was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the other driver apparently was not badly hurt as she refused medical treatment at the scene but took herself to a hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

Rehnelt declined to release the name of the dead man immediately and said the cause of the crash is pending a “lengthy” investigation
