A red C6 Corvette turned out to be really red hot Saturday during the first round of racing at the Motueka Dragway in New Zealand.

Local driver Ross Hurley was headed back to the pit area after competing in the opening race when his Corvette suddenly caught fire under the hood.

Hurley quickly climbed out of the car and wasn’t hurt, but despite fire crews rapidly putting out the blaze, the Corvette still suffered extensive damage.

Understandably, Hurley wasn’t too happy about the incident, telling the Waikato Times “that’s not up for discussion” when asked about the fire.

Marcus Vaipapa captured the aftermath on video and described it as “pretty epic” but “definitely a sad sight to see.”

The fire was just part of a troublesome day at the dragway, with technical issues with the computer running system already causing a delay to the start time. The Corvette blaze delayed action another hour while the car was removed.

Officials say they’re hoping to rebound when hosting the next two rounds of the New Zealand Drag Racing Association southern nationals on Feb. 4 and March 4.

“We’re going to put a lot of work in in the next few weeks to iron out those creases,” Nelson Drag Racing Association President Karl Dykes said.
