Some lucky person will soon have an opportunity to become the new owner of a verified 1969 Corvette L88 convertible.

But it won’t come cheap. A similar Le Mans Blue example that could trace its lineage all the way back to the original Georgia owner recently sold for a whopping $825,000.

This L88, ruled the real deal by experts David Burroughs and Tim Thorpe, will be on the block at the Hollywood Wheels Amelia Island Select auction set in Florida for March 12-15.

The car has a pedigree to impress even the most discriminating buyer, with Bloomington Gold certification, NCRS Performance Verification, and the highly coveted NCRS Duntov Award in 1988.

Only 116 such Corvettes were built in 1969, and this one underwent a concours restoration by the legendary Naber Brothers in Houston, Texas with full photo documentation.

The Corvette is also fully documented with the original tank sticker still attached. It’s been painted in Can Am White with saddle interior.

The car comes with both tops, canvas and fiberglass, and has the legendary L88 427/430hp engine, with 4-speed transmission. It goes without saying that it’s matching numbers. This one also is equipped with F41 Special Suspension, J56 Special Heavy Duty Brakes, and Positraction.

Envisioned as a race car available from the factory, the L88 came with aluminum heads with enlarged valves, a forged cross-drilled crankshaft, a radical cam with mechanical valve lifters, a massive Holley carburetor, a lightweight Harrison cross-flow radiator, high-compression aluminum pistons, and special spark plugs and ignition wires. Chevy rated the car at just 430hp, less than the standard L71, but various sources say the powerhouse engine actually made 560hp and 550 lb-ft of torque straight from the factory.

In all, only 216 L88s were built in the 1967, 1968, and 1969 model years at a cost of approximately $1,600 for the option package. Despite those low numbers, the L88s were a force in international racing and achieved spectacular results at Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans.
