Some people have had car collecting in their blood ever since they can remember. Howard Weaver of Ann Arbor, Michigan is one of those people.
In fact, after 77 years of doing so, Weaver has probably been collecting cars maybe longer than anybody in the United States. A little qualifier on that status: Weaver’s dad actually is the one who paid $50 for a 1931 American Austin in 1936 when little Howard was just 6 years old. That two-passenger coupe later became Howard’s first car, and he still has it along with many other outstanding vehicles in a series of four heated barns on his property. That car was the impetus for a lifetime of collecting cars.
Motortrend.com recently visited Mr. Weaver and pointed out that his “impeccably well-maintained collection” is always on the go, with some seeing action in parades, others loaned to museums, and still others that he and his wife Norma (who’s also a car enthusiast) enjoy driving on the roads around their home.
The collection offers a wide range of cars that many people may have never seen, just heard the name.
Take, for example, his 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk, which features a supercharged 289 V8 that makes 275 horsepower. Weaver says he bought it as a present for his wife, who likes many of the more eccentric-looking vehicles in the collection.
Of course, no collection would be complete without a Corvette, and Weaver has a beautiful example of a 1961 with a 283 V8, four-speed, and detachable hardtop.
Others in his barns include a 1960 Chevrolet Impala, which “can do 60 mph all day long,” Weaver says.
Also featured are a 1950 Chrysler Royal Station Wagon, which has shiny ash trim bolted onto the steel body and doors; a 1956 Packard Caribbean Custom Convertible, which even has reversible interior cushions; a 1941 Lincoln Continental Twelve, loaded with luxury items, including hands-free push-button doors; and a 1957 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer, which makes 310 hp with its 325 V8 and has a three-speed push button automatic transmission.
