When’s the last time you came across a 1963 Corvette Split Window that’s been in the same family for 62 years?
That’s exactly the story behind a promising C2 now attracting heavy bidding on Bring a Trailer. The car, purchased in February 1964 and later passed to the seller’s brother in 1998, has already climbed to $45,000 with six days still remaining.
One commenter summed up the appeal simply: “Split window project with provenance going back 62 years? Not many cars can fill that bill.” Another added a personal touch, noting, “I was born on 8/3/63. This car may have been rolling down the assembly line on August 2nd or 5th! I’d love to restore this vehicle!”
The Corvette wears Riverside Red, though the lacquer finish is long past its prime. After a crash early in its life, the car was repainted, and today it shows cracks and large missing chunks of paint, especially around the headlights and rear window. Don’t be scared by the bare-bones look – photos show the exterior emblems, gas lid, door panels, and armrests are included. We couldn’t spot new carpet in the photos, but that’s an easy acquisition. Overall, the bones are definitely there.
Under the hood sits the original 327ci V8, rebuilt in 2001 by Corvettes Only of Denver, with receipts of more than $11,000 included. The car has been in storage ever since, meaning the engine hasn’t seen real road time in more than two decades.
Bring a Trailer commenters also weighed in on factory details, including the VIN tag. One user noted, “I believe the two pairs of VIN tag spot welds are not unusual. One of my ’63s had them.” But another countered, “The area where the factory would have spot welded initially on the sides of the VIN tag has clearly been drilled out. That is something someone did after it left the factory.”
It’s the kind of spirited back and forth that often accompanies early Corvettes, especially split windows, where originality is scrutinized down to the weld marks.
The car has been fitted with 1966 disc brakes, a desirable upgrade for drivability. It rides on silver 15-inch steel wheels with redline tires and retains the fully independent suspension that debuted on the C2 — upper and lower control arms up front and a three link setup with a transverse leaf spring in the rear.
The trim tag decodes cleanly:
• Style 837 – 1963 Corvette coupe
• Body 10430 – St. Louis body number
• Trim 490L – Red vinyl
• Paint 923 – Riverside Red
Even the commenters couldn’t resist reflecting on the car’s age — and their own. One joked, “I was born 7 days before you… I believe it’s safe to say the ’63 SWCs are — like us — plenty old enough to be classics, yet still have much to contribute.”
With its family history, iconic split window design, and honest project car condition, this Corvette should be ready to hit the road again soon.
