Purists may wince, but anyone willing to look beyond factory correctness will find a whole lot to like in this 1965 Corvette convertible. Born in St. Louis as a red on red, fuel injected beauty, the car has since reinvented itself as a silver over black bruiser now listed out of Lake County, California, for $62,000.

And the transformation goes far deeper than paint.

Lift the stinger hood and you’ll find a fresh 396 big block, backed by a Muncie M22 Rock Crusher and a 4.11 Positraction rear end—a trio built for drivers who prefer their Corvettes with attitude. The seller calls it “what a combo,” and the video linked in the listing backs him up with a soundtrack that leaves little room for debate.

Inside, the black cabin shows some age—especially the door panels—but nothing that detracts from the car’s overall presence. The chassis is described as clean, the body straight, and the lacquer paint presents well for a driver. Glass and brightwork appear solid, too.

Recent mechanical work helps seal the deal: new bushings, fresh suspension front and rear, new tires, and a professionally installed soft top. The seller sums it up as a “great running and sounding Sting Ray in amazing condition,” and for once, that familiar Craigslist phrase feels justified.

He calls it a “really fun car,” then closes with a line that feels tailor made for this particular Corvette: “Why not start enjoying an investment by driving it?”

For anyone who values performance over pedigree, that’s a hard argument to counter.

  1. I’m sure that it’s a gas to drive with that drive train. Price seems aggressive, but not crazy.

  2. Assuming the 396 is what is not stock? Any idea what car the 396 came from? If it was a FI car it had to be a small block. Still, it’s a nice car with a lot of potential. I had a 65 396/425 coupe until 1974. Great car.

  3. Watching Mecum, Corvette prices are getting insane. I guess we can blame the government spending and Fed runaway currency printing. You should have a balanced portfolio with precious metals and collector cars. Paid off house with no other debt is a huge bonus.
