Corvette Delivery Dispatch with National Corvette Seller Mike Furman for July 13th

Criswell Chevrolet’s Mike Furman delivers new Corvettes to his customers who come from all across the country to work with the nation’s top individual Corvette seller.

It’s Sunday and that means a great set of photos from our friend Mike Furman. Mike offers up some of his latest C8 Corvette deliveries and then dives into his personal archives to share some great vintage and throwback photos of Corvettes from years past. ~The story of 1953 Corvette vin 0051 owned by the famous actor and American icon John Wayne.

John Wayne Generously Gives Ward Bond a New Chevy and the Funny Story Behind It.

Wayne, known for wrangling horses and against bad guys in the Wild West, had a funny thing happen with one of the first-ever Chevy Corvettes he was given. This was a brand new, shiny sports car, number 51 of the 1953 assembly line! But hold your horses, because the Duke’s love affair with the Corvette was shorter than a tumbleweed in a tornado. Turns out, at a whopping 6’4”, the Duke just couldn’t squeeze his frame into that sleek little car. No surprise there – the Corvette was brand new and not exactly known for its spaciousness. So, instead of wrestling with the steering wheel, the Duke decided to gift the ‘Vette to his buddy, actor Ward Bond.

Now, this 1953 Corvette was something special. It was the first of its kind, a real head-turner with a powerful 3.9-liter straight-six engine (think “Blue Flame”) that kicked out 150 horsepower. Fancy, huh? That engine could push this fiberglass beauty up to a cool 107 mph. Back then, that was something to brag about down at the local diner. But for the Duke, it just wasn’t practical. He was a man who needed room to roam, a place for his cowboy hat, and a vehicle that could handle the tough terrain. That Corvette just wasn’t built for wranglin’ cattle or wearin’ a Stetson. The Duke preferred his rides big and bold, like his famous “War Wagon”, a 1966 International Harvester Travelall, or his custom station wagons by George Barris in the 70s. Those rides fit the Duke like a well-worn holster – plenty of space and a place for his signature hat. And wonder how a Duke Ward Bond would handle this 4-wheeled machine, it must be harder than a cowboy riding a horse. The Duke’s Corvette ended up at the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada, a reminder that even Hollywood legends can struggle with a new set of wheels.

~C8 Deliveries for the Week

~Bill and Barb M. of Hanover, Pennsylvania were literally waiting for me to return from vacation as they showed up in my office at 7:45am this morning, my first moment back as they wanted to buy their third new Corvette from me. I sold them a brand new Inferno Orange 2012 Grand Sport, a 2024 Yellow Corvette and today they took delivery of a new Black 2025 Corvette Coupe. They traded in their Black 2024 Silverado Trail Boss. Equipment: 1LT, black exhaust tips, performance exhaust, 20 spoke gloss black forged wheels.

~John L. of Hacienda Heights, California factory ordered his new Red Mist metallic Tintcoat 2025 Corvette Eray Coupe with Natural interior. We completed the paperwork via Fed ex and this past Saturday it was loaded by Plycar Trucking for the enclosed trailer 3,000 mile trip to John’s California home. Equipment: 2LZ, GT2 buckets, stealth interior trim, red engine cover, front lift, CF interior trim, edge red calipers, black exhaust tips, gloss black wheels, scrape armor grille, ZER performance tires and more.

~Dan S. of Finksburg, Maryland was referred to me by several different folks as Dan was first looking for a used C8. I had this Riptide Blue 2025 Corvette Z51 coupe at the Corvette Plant about to get built so he waited a couple weeks for it to arrive at Criswell. Today was his appt for his very first Corvette and he was in and out swiftly. Dan said it was the easiest buying experience that he has ever had. Equipment: 2LT, Two tone Sky cool gray/Black interior, GT2 buckets, front lift, battery protection pkg, Z51, 5 split spoke sterling silver wheels, magnetic ride.

Hmm…Is that Carroll Shelby standing next to the #16 Corvette in the first photo of the 1966 Road America 500? White pants, dark jacket, black Stetson. Check, check, and check. Or maybe Smokey Yunick?

Lots of celebrities. John Wayne, Ward Bond, Jackie Robinson, Bill Mitchell, Johnny Unitas, Joie Chitwood Jr., Dinah Shore…Zora, of course, and probably more that I just don’t recognize.

My fave photo is the ’96 Grand Sport convertible, one of my wish list Corvettes. I can’t tell if it has the rare red interior. Nice!
