[VIDEO] C7 and C8 Corvettes Unleased at the Drag Strip

I have a couple of quick drag races to share today from the Wheels Plus YouTube Channel with two races featuring C7s and one is a C7/C8 Stingray grudge match that was interesting to watch as well.

Actually that C7 vs C8 Stingray battle happens first and it was our reason for visiting. One of the benefits for the C8 on the mid-engine platform was that GM engineers said they had done all they could to the C7 generation to help put that rubber to the road. This is where the C8’s extra weight of the engine being over the rear-axle comes really comes into focus as it stops the excessive wheel slip and allows the tires to hook up quicker.

The driver of the C7 Corvette Stingray was ready and actually got off the line sooner despite the wheel slip. We’re also thinking the C7 was equipped with a manual transmission versus the C8 Stingray’s dual-clutch transmission. You can see the car actually lift and hear the wheels chirp as the car is shifted into 2nd gear. It looks like a close race, but the C8 Corvette comes back to win quite handily with a time of 11.87 seconds at 120.77 mph versus the C7 Corvette coming in at 12.76 seconds at 113.98 mph.

The second race of this double-header brings in a C7 Corvette Z06 to go up against a 5.0L Ford Mustang. The launch of both cars features some wheel spin but it’s the Corvette that nudges ahead and never relinquishes the lead for the win with a time of 11.92 seconds at 126.76 mph versus the 12.55 seconds at 114.16 mph from the Mustang. The Z06 driver was lucky to have faced the Mustang and not the C8 Corvette from the previous race which would have won that matchup as well based on the times.
