So exactly how much fun can you have with a C6 Z06?
Just ask pro stock racer Jesse Iwuji, who shares his drifting talents in his 2006 Z06 with Top Gear’s American Tuned correspondent Rob Dahm.
And believe me, once you watch the YouTube video of all the fun they had – both on the track and playing with Jesse’s simulation gear – it’ll have you wanting to take your own Corvette out to the track and do some drifting.
Jesse is one of those people who takes life by the horns and lives it to the fullest. He was a college football standout, a former lieutenant commander in the Navy, and is currently the only NASCAR driver actively serving his country.
His pro racing career started after he bought an “absolute monster” of a 2006 Z06 back in 2013 and was enjoying his first track day with the car within the first two or three weeks.
“Next thing you know, I’m like, why not try to take it to the next level?” Jesse explains to Rob.
The two share a look at the Z06, which, by the way, has a whopping 222,000 miles on the odometer and has never been opened up, “never, nothing,” according to Jesse.
“Now going to the drift build, there’s a reason why these wheels and tires are sticking out a lot more,” he says, noting that the upper- and lower-control arms are designed for drifting. He also added a Wisefab kit to give it “so much angle – I mean, I can back it into a corner if I wanted to.”
The car also features Feal coilovers all the way around and a Hydro, “which is that big stick you see in there – it works in line with the brakes in the rear so it uses your existing caliper to lock up the rears when you’re going into a drift and then it allows you to basically get the car sideways, get it set, and then drift out of it.”
To help with his real-life NASCAR racing and drifting, Jesse says he uses a sim rig at his home “instead of practicing like on the street or something crazy like that, right?”
He lets Rob get his feet wet on the sim rig, then takes him to the Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, California where Rob experiences some déjà vu.
“Yeah, we literally were just here on the sim, but now we’re here in real ife,” Jesse affirms before giving Rob some real-life lessons on drifting in the Z06 before turning the keys over to the host of American Tuned.
