Make it a perfect six for six! Car and Driver’s industry-standard automotive awards, the annual 10Best List, hit digital newsstands today, and the eighth-generation Corvette, once again, found itself among the honorees. 10Best dates back to 1983 and is based on a simple premise: crowning the very best cars on the market for a given model year by testing every new and/or significantly refreshed one head-to-head against the returning champs. For the 2025 model year, as it was in 2024, the price cutoff is $110,000 because, as they say, it had better be outstanding if it’s asking over C&D’s somewhat lofty threshold!
As the 8,600 RPM Z06 – a car that certainly fits the “outstanding” bill – barely misses the cutoff with a base MSRP around $114,000, defending the Corvette’s place on the list falls to the LT2-powered members of the family for the second year in a row, and they, once again, answered the bell like a pair of dutiful doormen. C&D opens with the perfect distillation of GM’s halo model:
“Today, the Corvette is riding an undeniable, history-making high.” Not much more really needed to be said, really, but as words quite literally keep the lights on, they decided to continue heaping on praise and affirming The General’s hard-fought decision to put the tip of its spear through divisive engine-relocation surgery at the dawn of the ’20s: “After decades of rumors, the decision to pull the trigger and move to a mid-engine configuration for the current-generation Vette was controversial but one that has played out in spectacular fashion for Chevrolet. The Corvette is now on another level.”
The distinguished team of editors goes on to highlight the Stingray’s still-exceptional value, the E-Ray’s savage acceleration, and the unique, but somehow still very “Corvette” proposition offered by each member of the portfolio; landing on adjectives like “Superb,” and labeling the entire range a “Smash Hit.”
As with last year, the only way for us to properly illustrate the significance of the C8’s dominance at 10Best is through sports metaphors that resonate with an estimated 70% of Americans. So, the 2020+ Corvette is now in a league with Michael Jordan, having six titles to its name, and the overall Corvette nameplate inches to within one of the New York Yankees by ascending to its discipline’s ultimate throne for a 26th time!
The ‘Vette’s 26th nod helps it hold a tie for second place on the all-time 10Best List with Porsche’s mid-engine offerings – the Boxter and Cayman. It now trails only the 39 appointments of the Honda Accord, which, it must be noted, gets in on completely different merits and can only be graded on a different scale than Corvettes and Porsches. It also moves America’s Sports Car three notches above C&D’s long-time sporty favorite: the BMW 3 and 4-Series, which was again conspicuous by its absence after earning a reputation as a shoe-in by earning a spot every year between 1992 and 2014 (its last showing!).
In total, eight of the 2024 winners were able to repeat in 2025, with just two newcomers fighting their way in. GM again led all manufacturers by claiming three of the ten spots – along with one of the separate truck/SUV/van slots – with Cadillac’s sublime Blackwing performance sedans. The twin-turbo V6 CT4-V and its LT4-powered CT5 big brother joining the C8 ‘Rays in the undefeated circle with a perfect 4-0 record in 10Best competition since hitting the scene in 2022. Rounding out the other 70% are a pair of Hondas in the juggernaut Accord and the 11th generation Civic, the pesky 718 Cayman/Boxter, another set of sporty twins in the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ, a pair of token EVs (Tesla Model 3, Lucid Air), and the new Mercedes E-Class which is fresh off a Motor Trend Car of the Year win – though no ‘Vettes were eligible, so does it really count?
Every time one of these prestigious honors is bestowed on the Corvette, we like to imagine Mary Barra and Mark Reuss marching down to Tadge’s, or now our guy Tony Roma – who was also responsible for the Blackwings – office with cake, Champaign (only for after the quitting bell rings, of course!), and maybe even a nice little bonus check; the whole team certainly deserves it after delivering such unanimously incredible vehicles to an increasingly volatile yet somehow monotonous marketplace!

Automotive trivia:
“Arkus-Duntov following a column by Jerry Burton written in 1979, which characterized that the car’s rear suspension as “ill-conceived,” he sued Car and Driver for defamation of character. The fact his name wasn’t mentioned in the article and that his Corvette responsibilities had ended four years earlier made no difference in Arkus-Duntov’s mind. The suite was eventually dismissed.” (Source, The story of Zora Arkus-Duntov, the bad-ass who made the Corvette an icon. by Don Sherman Oct 31,2014, Car and Driver)
