The reputation of C8 Corvette powertrains continues to grow, with the latest variant earning a prestigious slot on Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems for 2024.
Named to the list was the hybrid E-Ray’s powertrain, which produces a total of 655 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque with its 495-horsepower LT2 V8 gasoline-powered engine and its 160-horsepower front-mounted electric motor.
The winning streak for the C8 powertrains began in 2020 with the LT2 engine of the Stingray and continued in 2023 with the flat-plane crank 5.5-liter LT6 V8 of the Z06.
From a field of 34 nominees for 2024, Wards editors chose eight electrified vehicles and two ICE-powered vehicles for its top 10 list.
“With the electrified market mix shifting to a blend of battery-electrics and hybrids, our list truly reflects – and predicts – where propulsion system development is headed as the industry continues its transition from internal-combustion power to full electrification,” says Bob Gritzinger, WardsAuto editor-in-chief.
“Our judges are equally excited about the wide range of propulsion systems on our 30th annual list, whether in the form of a battery-electric, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or internal-combustion-powered vehicle,” he says. “It’s truly a fantastic time to be able to sample and appreciate the variety of powertrains the industry has to offer.”
Besides the E-Ray, this year’s honorees include the BMW X5 xDrive50e, Ford F-150 PowerBoost, Honda Civic Hybrid, Hyundai Ioniq 5 N AWD, Kia EV9 GT, Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, Ram 1500 Tungsten, Toyota Camry XSE AWD, and Toyota Corolla GR.
Winners will be honored Oct. 10 by Wards during an invitation-only ceremony at Huntington Place convention center in downtown Detroit.
The Wards 10 Best has recognized leading propulsion systems for the past 30 years, with scoring based on horsepower, torque, NVH management, observed efficiency, and new technology onboard. Only powertrains that are all-new or significantly improved are eligible.
