Corvettes for Sale: Take a Chance on this Non-Running C4 Corvette?

This low-mileage 1993 Corvette convertible from the model’s 40th anniversary year will be heading to a new home soon.

The only problem is, the current owner says his 11,000-mile beauty will start up but then immediately shuts off. This sounds like a similar problem that I had briefly with my ’96 last summer, and while I don’t remember all the particulars, the problem had to do with the infamous VATS system and was an easy fix for my mechanic.

Whether this car has the same problem will be up to the new owner to decide, but it definitely has the potential to turn out to be quite a bargain-basement purchase. As of Saturday morning, with the eBay auction coming to a close at 7 a.m. Monday, the high bid of $7,405 has already passed the reserve and probably won’t climb much higher.

That sounds like a real deal to us, especially since this Corvette has a lot of other good things going for it, not the least of which is its super rare color of Bright Aqua Metallic that coated only 1,305 of the 21,590 Corvettes built during the celebratory year. The seller says the paint is still in “near perfect” shape, no surprise since the car has always been garage stored (and now his wife wants her garage back!).

The black leather interior, meanwhile, shows no rips or damage, and the white convertible top is said to be in “excellent” condition, though it does have some wrinkles from lying folded in the storage compartment, perhaps for years before being raised again for photos.

Meanwhile, if the car can ever stay running, the new owner will have the use of the original 5.7-liter LT1 engine that pumped out 300 horsepower and 340 lb-ft of torque. Adding to the appeal is this car’s six-speed manual transmission, with just a quarter of the production leaving the Bowling Green factory that way (5,330).

Other features include the rare luggage rack (765 ordered that year), air conditioning, Delco/Bose sound system, and sport power bucket seats.

The new owner would be wise to head to the nearest tire shop as soon as the deal is completed, as the original 31-year-old tires are still on the car.

The original window sticker and build sheet are included. Based on the accident-free AutoCheck history, the original owner kept the car through 2011, and it’s since passed through four more owners, all in Michigan.

  1. Wow, it’s a nice car just fix it ya idiot! Why would you not fix it, probably pretty minor. Don’t understand people like this. Why are people so friggen stupid??

  2. If I was in the market for a C4 I’d maybe take a chance on it. It has super low miles and I love the Bright Aqua paint. I have a 93 Coupe that had a similar issue as this car. It started out cutting off while driving and I would quickly shift it into neutral and it would restart. I quit driving it because after that it got to where it would quickly cut off after starting it while sitting in the driveway. I had to have it towed to a service shop where they replaced the Optispark distributor and serpentine belt. It has run fine ever since.

  3. With that low mileage, it’s clearly a simple fix that can likely be diagnosed with a loaner OBD2 scanner from any auto parts store and a part for likely <$100 on RockAuto. I'll opine that what's keeping the bidders away is that dreadful fake luggage rack, destroying the lines of this C4. It's completely non-functional. Who ruins their Corvette with that nonsense??
