One of the headliners for last weekend’s Bloomington Gold show was the 1953 VIN 001 Corvette. Owner Corey Peterson has been making the rounds with his prized C1 since he revealed it to the world in February of 2023.

Corey hosted two seminars at Bloomington Gold talking about this significant Corvette. The car was presented without paint in running and driving condition to show the bodywork that had been done to it over the years. The format for each session was a question-and-answer scenario which covered his search, acquisition, and research of the car. After that he opened things up to the crowd for more questions.

1953 VIN 001 had long been thought to have been destroyed after testing, but that no longer appears to be the case. The car had been sitting in an Oklahoma repair shop for 20-some years after the owner failed to come up with payment for the work performed. Ironically, that was the same shop where the famous VIN 003 Corvette was restored.

After paying the car’s owner for the C1 and the shop’s owner for 20+ years of storage it was research time. Over the course of his talk, Corey walks through all the data he’s got documenting VIN 001 and its internal shop order name, 3950. We’ll let Corey fill in the blanks from there.

Corey is a walking encyclopedia of early Corvette knowledge. Just watch him recite the location of the first dozen Corvettes purely from memory. We love his transparent, conversational approach to the car. He’s happy to share it with everyone and show off his findings. You’ll even note the speaker for his microphone sitting right on the car’s trunk.

With that, block out the next 40 minutes or so, and learn about the first production Corvette.

  1. If any Corvette ever deserved an immaculate frame off ground up restoration this is one of them.

  2. With all the research he has done why oh why not just unbolt the frame from the body before putting the front and rear bumpers on and lift the body enough to look at the frame where it is hidden to look for serial number?! Would really not take that long to do.
