Corvettes for Sale: The Ex-Greg Picket 1967 Corvette Racer is Offered on BaT

A 1967 Corvette coupe with a long history of racing is being offered for the next 10 days on Bring a Trailer, where the high bid has already climbed to $67,427.

The original owner, Dr. Bill Geen of California, knew what he wanted when he bought this car – to use it in motorsport events. Indeed, he and Greg Pickett would form Pickett Racing in the early ’70s and modified this car for SCCA A-Production road racing and then IMSA, SCCA, and Trans Am Events with #7 Pickett Racing livery from ’72 to ’76.

The second owner, Stan Laskin, was the SCCA Regions A-Production Champion in 1978 and raced it until 1981. The current owner had the car from ’84 to ’88 and then was fortunate enough to buy it again in 2001, undertaking a refurbishment in 2003 and participating in HMSA, SVRA, VARA, and HSR West races through 2007.

These days, the car – which was last entered, accepted and prepped for the 2010 Monterey Historic Races as a backup that didn’t see action – sports a metallic blue paint job with replica #7 Pickett Racing livery, with the names of previous owners painted on the upper door jamb.

“The ‘Pickett Corvette’ is all race car,” the owner says, “but it’s still a real Corvette! We focused on maintaining its history and character during our two-year no-expense-spared restoration. We refused to take the shortcuts to a flimsy fiberglass silhouette and lose the real Corvette personality in the process.”

He believes making the car street-legal could be as simple as adding a horn, windshield wipers, DOT tires, and headlights,” but we hope the new owner will continue to race the car in vintage events.

A replacement short-stroke 427 V8 engine with dry-sump lubrication and a Braswell carburetor was installed in 2002, with a rebuild in 2004 that included resurfacing the cylinder heads and installing new pistons, titanium valves, lifters, oil pump gears, and gaskets. It’s been driven just 300 miles since.

Other features include a Jerico four-speed manual transmission, 3.70:1 rear end, Strange Engineering stub axles, KRC quick-ratio steering box, dual master cylinders, 15-inch American Racing Torq Thrust D II wheels, L88-style cowl-induction hood, and battery charging port above the rear license plate frame.

“The front body work is custom fabricated and completely removable in about 15 minutes from the windshield forward,” the seller explains, “although close inspection gives no clue and is consistent with stock configuration and includes wheel wells.”

The car’s fully independent suspension features upper and lower control arms in front and a three-link setup with a transverse leaf spring in back, with Koni adjustable shocks on each corner.

The interior is cool, painted green on the floor and roof and includes a racing seat covered in hand-stitched leather with a five-point Simpson race harness, roll cage, removable aluminum/wood composite steering wheel, and driver-side aluminum panels that reinforce the floorboard. Hidden behind a removal rear bulkhead are the fire suppression system, battery, and dry-sump reservoir, while the glove compartment holds an AiM data-logger and MSD ignition components.

Gauges fitted into the original Corvette bezel panel include speedometer, tachometer, water temp, oil temp, oil pressure, transmission temp, differential temp, battery voltage, and two large warning lights for oil pressure and one for water temp.

The hood, engine compartment, wheel wells, and all underbody panels have been gel coated, not just painted, for maintenance and aesthetics, and the nose and all leading paint edges of the body are covered in clear chip resistant film, according to the seller. “Even after severe track use and many races,” he says, “everything is still show quality. Photos are current, not touched up.”

Who’s ready to rumble onto the race track with this historic Sting Ray?
