Corvettes for Sale: Pennant Blue 1954 Corvette Offered on eBay

When the first 300 Corvettes were built for 1953, you could buy them in any color you liked as long as it was Polo White.

Chevy upped its game for ’54, offering Polo White and three new colors – Pennant Blue, Sportsman Red, and Black. The Corvette Black Book says there is a “reasonable probability” that some other colors were also produced during the model run of 3,640 roadsters, including but not limited to Metallic Green and Metallic Bronze.

Still, the overwhelming majority of cars were built in the old reliable Polo White, with an estimated 3,230 produced in that shade. Estimates for the other colors are 300 in Pennant Blue, 100 in Sportsman Red, and four in Black, leaving six unaccounted for.

The C1 Registry aims to collect as much data as possible about the current locations of first-generation Corvettes built from 1953 to 1962. According to its list for ’54 models, the car you’re looking at is the earliest known example of a Pennant Blue car, with VIN 1844, and the seller surmises that it could even be the first ever made in that color.

This historic C1 is currently available for sale on eBay, where it’s being offered at the “Buy It Now” price of $49,000 in the Detroit suburbs.

The seller touts the car as “extremely original,” and indeed the chrome and trim pieces, removable side windows, and the dual chrome spinner wheel covers appear to be in place, along with all the gauges and trim in the interior.

The car’s original 150-horsepower Blue Flame V6 engine and its two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission have already been rebuilt and have been reinstalled, according to the listing.

“A great deal of hours have been put into this car by a great friend,” the owner says, noting that the original plan was to restore the car mechanically and leave the body as is cosmetically.

Now, though, the seller has decided to part with this Corvette “because I’m not a mechanic and I no longer have a good mechanic. I’m buried in too much stuff.”

While he admits that he’s not a mechanic or an expert on early Corvettes, he promises he “will do everything I can to help answer your questions.”

One interesting note about the car: The Corvette Black Book says auxiliary hardtops were not available for ’54s as factory options or as Chevrolet-sponsored dealer accessories. However, aftermarket companies manufactured removable hardtops for 1953-55 models and some Chevrolet dealers sold them. Somewhere along the way, this ’54 seems to have picked up such a hardtop.

  1. Buy it for $50,000, put another, if lucky, $100,000 in it and 4 years of work, and it will be worth $70,000. No thanks
