Funny how model cars can bring back memories for the Boomer generation.

For instance, in the early ’70s, I found a huge 1/8 scale 1963 Corvette split window coupe at the Big K store. While my youthful hands never managed to complete the assembly and I even had to carefully place the tires inside the wheel wells just for appearance’s sake, I still have fond memories of that model car.

Fast forward to 2023, and Lego is likely banking on that kind of nostalgia to sell its new 1961 Corvette kit that launches next month.

Designed with more skilled adult builders in mind, the new Lego ‘Vette consists of 1,210 pieces and is 12.5 inches long, over 4 inches tall, and 5.5 inches wide.

You’ll find a Roman Red body with the iconic white coves, four round headlights and taillights, and even a removable hardtop to reveal a highly detailed interior with steering wheel, pedals, gear shifter, radio, window crank, rearview mirror, and gauge cluster.

The hood and trunk both open, the former lifting up to show off an engine with Corvette-branded valve covers and a spinning radiator fan. You can even turn the front wheels via the steering wheel controlled by a functional tie-rod system.

Further adding to the authenticity are three license plates, a Michigan plate (“GM 0937”), a California plate (“C1 1961”), and a Corvette-branded plate with the crossed-flags logo.

This fancy Lego kit, which comes in a nice display box with images of the finished model, will cost $149.99, not bad for the Corvette enthusiast who wants an unusual conversation piece on his shelf.

  1. Collectors and Corvette Blogger should know that Hallmark is also recognizing the anniversary with a 1953 White Corvette ornament announced in their catalog (which I received today in the mail).
