Corvettes for Sale: 1962 Corvette Fuelie Needs Some Attention

Restoring a 61-year-old car isn’t an easy task.

Witness this 1962 Corvette that’s been seeking a restoration for at least 13 years. Now it’s up for sale on eBay, where the current bid has climbed to $20,400 with the auction coming to an end on Sunday night.

What makes this Corvette so special, despite its rather rough appearance, is that it is said to be an original fuel-injected 327 car.

The story goes that the seller and his fiancé bought it from a National Corvette Restorers Society member 13 years ago as a project. They planned on finishing what the NCRS guy had started, but it’s been a rough road ever since the couple’s body shop closed up shortly after beginning the restoration and it’s sat in their garage ever since, even though it’s been sold a couple of times. Apparently, two previous buyers had second thoughts after closing the deal.

The car doesn’t include a block or heads, but it does have a 1962 fuelie unit #7017360 S/N 1592, dual point distributor 1111011 S/N2A2, Borg Warner T-10 dated 1/15/62, Delco-Remy generator with blank part number/date tag, fuelie oil pan with windage tray, flywheel, early Corvette valve covers, starter, and trans-axle.

The seller says over the years he has added a used ’62 front clip and picked up “what looks like a real” ’61-’62 hood.

Included with the sale are both tops, along with “lots of miscellaneous hardware.” While the car is said to still be missing “many parts,” the good news, at least according to the listing, is that it “has a lot to start if you want a real 1962 327 fuel injected car,” including speedometer cable, heater box, instrument cluster, clock, exterior heater cowl plate, emergency brake handle assembly, sill plates, pedal assembly, top seat back chrome, license plate chrome, front bumper supports, chrome “eyebrows,” radiator expansion tank, windshield frame, miscellaneous cables, foam, and hardware.

We spotted this car on Barn Finds, and we always enjoy finding out what their readers think about a specific vehicle. One fellow described this Corvette as not being “a viable project, even for an expert rebuilder. It just needs too much. You can buy an injected ’62 Corvette with its original drivetrain for less than $100,000. It would cost much more than that to restore this one with a replacement drivetrain.”

Another reader has already been there, done that, saying: “In March 1974 I bought a ’61 in similar condition. It had almost all the parts (LR bumper was missing, as well as a couple pieces of door trim) most in the trunk, but no motor or trans. I paid $500 for it which I thought was kinda high. Doing all my own work, I had about $7k in it by 1980 when it had been passably restored, except for having the stainless trim straightened and polished. Now on its third restoration I have about $50k total in the car, not counting the cost of the 427 Gen 1 small block injected motor. This ’62 car would need an owner that is very hands on, and complete list of what parts are there and of those, what are usable in order to figure out if this is feasible as a labor of love. It isn’t profit making project, though.”
