The Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Chevrolet announced on Tuesday that the 2023 Corvette Z06 Convertible will be pacing the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 28th, making it the 20th time a Corvette has led the field for the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing!”

This is the first time that a Z06 Convertible has led racers to the Green Flag, and it shows the expanded bandwidth that the hardtop convertible provides by serving on the track at any speed and providing open roof driving experiences while on the street.

“As we celebrate the rich history of the Corvette Pace Car at IMS, it’s amazing to see the evolution of these cars on and off the track,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “The hardtop convertible on the 2023 Corvette Z06 is just another example of the Chevrolet innovation that translates from track to street.”

The official pace car of the 107th Indy 500 is powered by the 5.5-liter LT5 engine featuring 670-hp and it’s wearing the full aero kit with high wing, front dive planes, front splitter, and side rocker panels.

The Pace Car is finished in Red Mist Metallic with two-tone Jet Black and Sky Cool Gray interior with Red seat belts. The Pace Car features a unique graphics package, Tech Bronze forged aluminum wheels, and the car has Carbon Flash Black Nacelles and roof. The emergency track lights are built into the Convertible’s rear-facing nacelles.

“We are honored to be pacing the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 with the Corvette Z06 convertible,” Scott Bell, Global Chevrolet vice president said in a release. “Chevrolet and IndyCar share the same spirit of competition, and we are proud the Z06 will lead the pack across the bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

This is Chevrolet’s 34th Indy 500 Pace Car overall, with the first Chevrolet pacing the famous May race for the first time in 1948. The Corvette received its first nod to pace the Indy 500 in 1978 and with the current car included, this is the 7th consecutive year that the Corvette has paced the race.

Last year’s pace car was the 70th Anniversary Corvette Z06, but it ran as a Coupe. We are still waiting for the announcement of who the official pace car driver will be. Last year, former IndyCar driver and team owner Sarah Fisher was honored to have led the pack at the famous “Yard of Bricks.”

  1. They ought to let Rick Mears drive it. He deserves the honor more than anyone else. That’s a sharp looking Pace Car. Chevrolet ought to sell limited edition replicas of it.
