GM Files Patent Application for a Lidar Vision System

Will there ever be a self-driving Corvette?

That idea seems to go against the very inherent mission of a sports car – to test the driving abilities of and to enhance the fun for the person behind the wheel.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that General Motors wouldn’t use all the technological advances it can muster in the rest of its lineup, or perhaps even to enhance the driving experience of cars like the Corvette to make them safer and better performing.

Along those lines, the United States Patent and Trademark Office published a GM patent application called “Lidar Vision Systems” on Feb. 28, though the original filing was back on Dec. 12, 2019. GM says in the new application that it has improved range over current lidar sensors with a new system.

Why all the uproar over lidar? Well, it’s because – outside of Tesla’s Elon Musk – the auto industry seems to believe that using lidar in combination with camera and radar systems is the best way to reach the ultimate goal of self-driving cars.

Lidar uses light waves projected from a sensor and bounced off nearby objects, with the pattern of the reflected light giving the system a way to determine the shape of the objects and how far away they are.

One drawback with lidar is that it may have problems detecting objects that are too far away from the vehicle, but in the filing last month, GM says it can make up for this by using lens assemblies around the sensor that have individual angled lenses to pick up more light.

GM has already confirmed it will use lidar beginning with the high-dollar 2024 Cadillac Celestiq, but initially with a unit outsourced from a company named Cepton.

  1. GM needs to stop this bullshit right now. We will never need a self driving Corvette or any kind of self driving vehicle. I’ve seen too many articles and videos about Teslas crashing while on auto pilot or whatever it is that Tesla calls it. I’ve also seen videos of idiots in Teslas running down the interstate while asleep or climbing into the backseat while the car is self driving itself.

  2. I’m more interested in the patent GM did for active aero for the C8. We don’t need self driving cars, how about cars that are just reliable.

  3. @Mako, I second that thought!
It’s about flipping time too. Well overdue active aero for the Corvette.
I can’t stand these ugly boy racer wings!!!
