Chevrolet kicked off the third generation of Corvette in 1968 with a bang.

For example, customers had a choice of a whopping 11 engine options, not to mention a long list of other amenities to make driving their new Stingray more enjoyable.

This ’68 convertible left the St. Louis factory boasting the most popular of the four 427 engines offered that year, with 7,717 built – the L36 version that pumped out 390 horsepower. Other versions included the more rare 400 horsepower L68, 435 horsepower L71, and 430 horsepower L88.

This classic Stingray is now being offered out of the Astoria, New York area on eBay at the “Buy It Now” price of $29,500.

The news is mixed about that 427 engine. The good news is that the original 427 powerplant remains in place under the hood all these years later, connected to a numbers-matching four-speed manual transmission.

Temper that optimism, however, with the fact that this Corvette went into storage in 1980 for some reason and isn’t in running condition these days, likely meaning a total rebuild of the engine is in order, but who knows for sure till you get in there and check it out?

To reach its former glory, this Stingray will require a lot of hard work overall, especially inside the cockpit where someone perhaps wearing bell bottoms appears to have replaced the seats with diamond-buttoned seats from the ‘70s. Was that John Travolta we spotted in the background of one of the photos? Just kidding, folks.

With restored versions of these chrome-bumper 427s bringing top dollar these days, upwards of $80,000 in some cases, there’s definitely some wiggle room for a new owner to open his wallet and not have to worry completely about going bankrupt.

Would you tackle the chore of bringing this manual 427 back to life? Let’s hope someone is willing and able because this car has the potential to be a real beauty when it’s done, don’t you think.
