Two occupants of a Torch Red C8 Corvette Stingray were showered with bullets, and the car then slammed into the side of the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama early Sunday morning, according to police reports.

The passenger suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to UAB Hospital in critical condition. While the driver was also shot, early reports indicate his injuries don’t appear life-threatening.

Officers with UAB police heard the shots and then found the Corvette slammed into the corner of the L wing of the hospital, where it had shattered a window and damaged the brick. VA officials say no structural damage to the building was caused by the crash, however. Likewise, no patients or staff inside the hospital were injured, but before hitting the building, the Corvette knocked down at least one parking meter and caused a VA sign to topple over and damage a VA employee’s truck.

At least a dozen bullets struck the Corvette, most of them on the passenger’s side, and police found shell casings from a handgun and a rifle in the intersection at University Boulevard and 19th Street.

Birmingham Police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service answered the call at 2:16 a.m. Sunday.

Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident to call detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
