A Corvette driver in North Carolina narrowly escaped what authorities are calling a “one-in-a-million” accident Friday morning.

Rescuers say a BMW convertible traveling on U.S. 23 ran off an overpass about 11:30 a.m. and landed on the passenger side of a silver C6 Grand Sport convertible traveling below with its top down on U.S. 64/Highlands Road, just east of Franklin.

The BMW then erupted into flames, captured in one of a series of dramatic photos by Franklin Fire and Rescue.

Two bystanders, hailed as “heroes” by Franklin police, managed to pull the uninjured Corvette driver out of his car. The driver of the BMW, meanwhile, had to be airlifted to Mission Hospital and is in stable condition, police added.

“Yesterday we responded to one of those 1 in a million type of calls,” Franklin fire officials said Saturday in a post on Facebook.
