[VIDEO] Future Z06 Owner: I Curbed My Carbon Fiber Wheels...Now What?

One of the most exciting equipment options on the new 2023 Corvette Z06 are the visible carbon fiber wheels. We’ve seen them on a very high percentage of the GM Captured Test Fleet cars spied so far, as we are sure GM has placed a high priority on testing the everyday durability of the wheels.

For enthusiasts considering the wheels, the feedback we’ve heard so far is that there are two major areas of concern when it comes to checking the box to add the optional carbon fiber wheels. They are the cost per wheel, and what happens if a wheel is damaged.

We can’t answer that first one as the GM Bean Counters have been out to lunch since mid-March, but the second question can be answered in the form of this new video from Carbon Revolution.

Carbon Revolution is the vendor tasked with creating the Corvette Z06’s five-spoke carbon fiber wheels and by all accounts, everything is moving forward with targets being met and wheels being shipping to the USA in advance of production starting later this summer.

In a recent interview with John at MidEngineCorvetteForum.com, members of Carbon Revolution’s team were asked about the repair process. Below is their answer, and then we have a new video from Carbon Revolution that details how the curb rash visible carbon fiber wheels can be repaired.

MECF: Carbon Revolution carbon fiber wheels while worth it to many of us, are not inexpensive. At the recent major GM Corvette event displaying the Z07 with your wheels, two prospective buyers were however apprehensive about repairing the visible carbon fiber ones if they messed up, centered around the question, “if I buy the visible carbon fiber version and curb one, where and how could I get it repaired?” We since secondhand read an article your Carbon Revolution founder said that you have a facility in the U.S. that can repair them. Knowing the name and location of that company would IMO facilitate more buying your wheels for their Z07. Is that U.S. located facility already repairing other OEM brands of your visible carbon fiber wheels?

Carbon Revolution: You don’t need to buy a new wheel if you scratch it on the curb. Our wheels are repairable. All of our wheels are painted with a clear coat top layer, and a paint shop can repair minor scrapes to this layer. For more significant curb rash damage where the top aesthetic carbon layer of the wheel has been disrupted, but the structure of the wheel has not been compromised, that layer can be repaired – our website has more information on this. In the case of the Z06 wheels, we are working with a GM approved wheel repair service to establish a pathway for customers to return wheels to dealership service centres for authorised review and repair of both the visible weave and painted options. If you have curbed your wheel we suggest getting in touch with an authorized dealer, who can assess it and provide you with options for repair or replacement.

In this video from Carbon Revolution released on Wednesday, it features their partners at Spyder Composites of Scotts Valley, CA as they show how curb rash and other damage to the carbon fiber wheels can be repaired.

We think this is a very positive development for those considering the visible carbon fiber wheels on their Z06s. While not cheap, having curb rash or light damage fixed should be a lot cheaper than having to buy a replacement.

  1. The prospect of CF wheel damage should generate a lot more care and precision in your driving style! In the case of the unavoidable pothole, wonder how much force these wheels can absorb before breaking?
