This Saturday our friends at Freije & Freije Auctions will be holding their annual Spring Big Boy Toy Auction in the small town of Clayton, Indiana which is just west of Indianapolis. I always find these smaller regional auctions interesting as more often than not you can come across a real diamond in the ruff. This sale features 150 cars and automobilia items and the good news is if you can’t be there in person, you can still register and bid online.
Last week we featured a couple of stunning classics and we have two more to show off before we get to the full run list.
The 1961 Corvette is a model year known for its Firsts and Lasts. With its redesign following the 1960 model year, 1961 Corvettes became the first without the heavy “teeth” in the grills and it was the first with the duck-tail rear end that would be part of the Corvette until 1968. It was also the first year to have the quad taillights and the first for the exhaust tailpipes to exit below the rear bumper. As for the Lasts, 1961 would be the last year of the 283-ci V8 engine as well as the last model to have contrasting coves and wide whitewall tires.
This 1961 Corvette Roadster offered on Saturday just completed a frame-off restoration in 2021. It features a numbers matching 283-ci engine mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. It’s painted Silver with white coves and inside the cockpit is a red leather interior. A set of modern custom 5-spoke wheels completes the look.
This rare Goldwood Yellow 1965 Corvette Sting Ray Sport Coupe with a black and white interior is fresh off a nuts and bolts Concours restoration. It’s equipped with the optional 327/300-hp V8 that is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The creature comforts are numerous for the sport coupe with the addition of factory air conditioning, power windows, power brakes, and a tilt/tele steering column. The Sting Ray rides on aluminum knock-off wheels with gold-striped tires and the odometer is stated to have 37,000 actual miles.

Interesting — the Milano Maroon convertible is listed as a ’65 and a ’65 VIN plate is pictured, but other pictures show a ’66 hood/front emblem, ’66 rear emblem, ’66 wheel covers, and ’66 seats.
