We’ve written previously about the oldest existing C3 Corvette, and when a car this rare is in the midst of an online auction via allcollectorcars.com, it’s definitely worth another look!
Over the years, collectors like Rick Hendrick and the late Bob McDorman have become known for their collections containing or focusing on early VIN Corvettes and we just saw the amazing $3.6 million selling price for Mr. H. to own the first 2023 Corvette Z06. For the discriminating collector looking for a special low-VIN Corvette to add to your collection, this 1968 Corvette VIN 002 may just be the car.
VIN 194678S400002 was produced on October 27, 1967 and was shipped to Jack Royeton Chevrolet in Sturgis Michigan. The Convertible underwent a high level body off restoration that is documented with a binder full of photos and receipts. Following restoration, the Corvette was judged and received NCRS Top Flight (2015) and Bloomington Gold Honors (2016). The Corvette also received Best in Class honors at the Boca Raton Concours (2016) and was featured at the Ault Park Concours (2016) and the Bloomington Gold Special Collection (2018).
It’s always nice to see variations in colors and the oldest C3 Corvette is shown wearing a Corvette Bronze exterior, the 4th most popular color in 1968 with a total of 3,374 (11.8%) ’68s featured in the color. Inside the car is the also non-traditional Dark Orange Vinyl (425) and the car is nicely optioned with driver conveniences including power steering, power brakes, tilt/telescopic steering column, and an AM/FM radio.
Open the hood and you’ll see the earliest 1968 Corvette is powered by the popular 327/350 hp V8 which was chosen by 2,898 buyers during the year. Coupled to the L79 is a Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission, allowing you to become one with the machine as you shift through those gears. And with 40,000 miles on the odometer, it’s the collectible Corvette that you can get out and drive once in a while and not feel bad about it.
The description tells us this 1968 Corvette retains its original no-hit body and the chain of ownership since new has also been documented. Included with the Corvette is its original Protect-o-Plate, owner’s manual, radio card, and more, along with the first 15 1968 Corvette Shipping Data Reports.
This auction for the 1968 Corvette VIN 002 has reached a high bid of $58,000 with the reserve price still not met. We really like the Reserve Meter at AllCollectorCars.com that shows us that even at $58,000, we’ve got a ways to go before the reserve will be met. Browsing their auctions, the reserves appear to be set really high. Many of the cars have reasonable bids on them with the reserve meter showing the current bid only around 1/2 or less of the reserve.
“High level body off restoration” and they couldn’t even get the ride height correct. We see this all the time, usually in the rear which is so easy to adjust.
