Chevrolet made a boatload (translation: 248,715) of fifth-generation Corvettes from 1997 to 2004, but this ’98 coupe currently on sale by a small South Carolina dealer on Craigslist is one of the rarest you’ll likely run across.
Calling it a “stunning unicorn in the C5 Corvette world,” Vette City, located in Seneca, South Carolina, is offering this Medium Purple Pearl Metallic coupe said to be one of just 229 C5 coupes (along with another 152 convertibles) ever produced in that shade. Chevy must have really been in love with purple in 1998 as you are likely very familiar with the 1,163 special Indy Pace Car editions in the darker shade of Pace Car Purple (with a dab of yellow scattered throughout). The love affair with the color was short-lived, however, as purple never again appeared on the color palette for the rest of the C5 run.
This Medium Purple example is even rarer because it’s one of just 71 with a Gray interior, which in our opinion offers a perfect contrast to the exterior.
Such exclusivity comes at a price, which the dealer describes as “firm” at $24,900. We think that’s a fair price for what appears to be a very nice C5 that, of course, features the 345-horsepower LS1 engine under the hood.
Not much more information is provided about the car in the craigslist description, though you can check out a video at vettecity.net to get a closer look at this one-owner Corvette with just 25,000 miles that the dealer describes as a “collection quality vehicle” and “one of the most unique C5 Corvettes ever produced.”
While we wouldn’t have picked a purple car, we still think this is a very attractive shade. What’s your take?
